What the NPGS is worth
The NPGS is a full PhD package, not a one-off prize. The monthly stipend is revised with effect from January 2026 and is paid at S$5,300 for Singapore citizens, S$4,800 for Singapore permanent residents and S$4,300 for international students. On top of the stipend, NTU states that ‘this award also covers the annual tuition fee’.
The allowance list is generous by research-scholarship standards: an overseas conference allowance of up to S$5,000 per financial year (April to March), a S$500 book allowance each year, a one-time S$1,500 IT allowance and a one-time S$600 thesis allowance that is disbursed in the final year at renewal. Singapore citizens also receive Central Provident Fund contributions on top of the stipend.
Eligibility for the Nanyang President’s Graduate Scholarship
- Nationality: all nationalities are eligible – NTU states this on the NPGS page.
- Academic bar: an Honours (Highest Distinction) or equivalent at bachelor’s level.
- Final-year students: candidates who have not completed their undergraduate degree must provide official documentation from their university confirming they are on track to graduate with an Honours (Highest Distinction) degree or equivalent.
- Course: a full-time PhD programme at NTU.
- Bond: none.
- Graduate Assistantship: international students must perform teaching or laboratory supervision duties to fulfil the requirements of the Graduate Assistantship Programme (GAP).

How long the scholarship runs
The award is tenable for one year in the first instance and is renewable subject to good progress. The maximum period is 4 years for PhD candidates, and NTU notes that continuation is decided by the school as well as the availability of research funding in each case.
Important dates for the 2027-28 intake
- NTU’s NPGS page states that for Academic Year 2027-2028 the application period ‘will be announced in due course’.
- The application period for the National Institute of Education (NIE) ‘will also be announced in due course’.
- There is no separate NPGS deadline: you indicate your interest in the scholarship in your application for admission, and successful candidates are told the outcome together with the offer of admission by email.

- Prepare your supporting documents, including proof of your bachelor’s result (or, if you are in your final year, the university’s confirmation that you are on track for Honours with Highest Distinction).
- Submit the NTU graduate admission application when the intake window opens, and indicate your interest in the Nanyang President’s Graduate Scholarship inside that application – there is no separate scholarship form.
- Wait for the result: NTU states that successful candidates are informed of the outcome together with the offer of admissions, by email.
- If you are awarded, note that international students must serve the Graduate Assistantship Programme duties to keep the award.
NPGS and the other NTU graduate awards
NTU also runs the NTU Research Scholarship, which is a wider, less selective award for research students – on NTU’s own page it pays an international student S$3,000 a month for PhD and S$2,900 for master’s by research, requires a minimum of Honours (Distinction), and is tenable for up to two years for master’s and four years for PhD candidates. Like the NPGS, it is applied for through the admission application rather than a separate form, and it also covers the annual tuition fee.
The difference that matters is the academic bar: the NPGS asks for Honours with Highest Distinction and is the more prestigious of the two, while the Research Scholarship asks for Honours with Distinction. Both are open to international students, and both carry no bond.
