What is the Post Matric Scholarship for Students with Disabilities?
This is one of the six components of the central sector umbrella scheme Scholarships for Students with Disabilities run by the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities. The post-matric component is for study after Class 10, while the department separately runs pre-matric (Class 9 and 10), Top Class Education, National Overseas and National Fellowship components.
The scheme is for students with benchmark disability, that is 40% or more disability as defined in the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, supported by a valid certificate of disability issued by the competent authority.
How much money does the scheme pay?
- Admission and tuition fee reimbursement: up to Rs 1.40 lakh per annum, subject to the actual amount paid or payable to the institution or university.
- Miscellaneous fee: up to Rs 10,000 per annum (library fee, sports fee, medical examination and other fees compulsorily payable to the institution or board), subject to the actual amount.
- Maintenance allowance: Rs 1,200 per month for hostellers and Rs 650 per month for day-scholars.
- Disability allowance: Rs 4,000 per annum for visual impairment or intellectual disabilities and Rs 2,000 per annum for all other types of disability.
- Book allowance: Rs 1,500 per annum.
All components are paid into the student’s Aadhaar-seeded bank account through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) mode. An employed student can also get the scholarship to the extent of reimbursement of compulsorily payable non-refundable fees, provided the combined income of the student and parents or guardian stays within the income ceiling.
Courses covered under the post-matric scheme
- Class 11 and 12, and all recognised post-matriculation or post-secondary courses up to Master’s degree level in recognised institutions and universities.

- Students who study through correspondence, distance or continuing education are also eligible for the post-matric scheme.
- LL.B., B.Ed. and B.El.Ed. courses taken up after B.A., B.Sc. or B.E. are eligible.
