What does the Exeter Excellence Scholarship cover?

The value is different for a bachelor’s degree and for a master’s degree, and the undergraduate award is the more valuable of the two because it repeats every year.

  • Undergraduate: £15,000 per year, paid as a reduction of the international tuition fees. The discount recurs at the same value for each subsequent year of the degree for which full tuition fees are due – it does not apply to study abroad, placement or repeat years. 150 awards.
  • Postgraduate taught (Masters): £15,000, paid as a reduction of the first-year international tuition fees only. It is not recurring for the second year. 150 awards.
  • The January 2027 entry round pays £3,000, £5,000 or £10,000 towards the first-year international tuition fees of the listed Masters programmes.

Who can apply for the Exeter Excellence Scholarship?

  • You must have international fee status – this includes EU applicants who are required to pay international fees in 2027/28. There is no country restriction, so students from India are eligible.
  • You must already hold a conditional or unconditional offer for an eligible degree at the University of Exeter (year one of an undergraduate degree starting September 2027, or an eligible Masters starting September 2027).
  • For the January 2027 round the offer must be for an eligible Masters beginning in January 2027, and you must not have applied in Round 1 or Round 2 of the 2026/27 scheme for the same programme for September 2026 entry.
  • The scholarships are intended for self-funded students. If your fees are financed by an external body such as an overseas government, Chevening or Commonwealth, the award may be invalidated – you have to tell the university about any external funding.
  • Academic merit is the main selection criterion: an undergraduate applicant is expected to show the equivalent of GCE A level grades AAB, and a Masters applicant the equivalent of a UK upper second class (2:1) degree.
  • Students progressing from the University of Exeter International Study Centre (ISC) International Foundation are not eligible for the undergraduate award.

How to apply for the Exeter Excellence Scholarship

  1. Apply for admission to the University of Exeter for 2027/28 and get your offer (the deferral of an offer invalidates the scholarship, so do not defer).
  2. Open the scholarship form from the award page and submit it online – the 2027/28 form is at forms.cloud.microsoft (linked on the official pages below).
  3. Write the personal statement of no more than 300 words answering two questions (up to 150 words each): your personal aspirations and how studying at Exeter will help you achieve them; and how, as an Exeter Scholar, you will make the most of the opportunity to contribute to the university community.
  4. Submit before the round deadline. You can make only one application per eligible programme you hold an offer for, and duplicate applications are disregarded.
  5. Wait for the decision email by the date shown for that round. If you are offered an award, accept it by the deadline given in the notification – unaccepted awards are withdrawn.

The university warns that answers should be authentic and personal, and that generic or heavily AI-assisted responses are less competitive.
