IIT Bhilai has opened Ph.D. admissions for the session starting January 2027, which the institute calls the 2026-27-W (winter) semester. The online portal opened on 15 October 2026 and the last date for submitting the application is 15 November 2026 at 5:00 PM IST. Twelve departments are admitting research scholars, from Computer Science and Data Science & AI to Liberal Arts and Physics.
The application fee is deliberately low – Rs 200 for most candidates and Rs 100 for SC/ST/PwD and female candidates – and the institute pays an assistantship to full-time scholars under the Institute Fellowship category as per Ministry of Education norms. IIT Bhilai is an Institute of National Importance set up in 2016 at Bhilai, Chhattisgarh.
One warning before you read the page: the official schedule table still carries leftover lines from the Monsoon 2026 cycle (May and June 2026 dates, and the “2026-27-M semester” note in the payment step). The rows that matter for this cycle are the two dated entries below – portal opened 15 October 2026 and last date 15 November 2026. The department-wise May/June dates on the same table belong to the previous, closed cycle.

IIT Bhilai PhD eligibility: marks and national tests
You need one of the following qualifying degrees in the appropriate subject, with a first class and at least 60% marks – the bar is 55% for SC/ST/PwD candidates:
- Master’s degree in engineering or technology.
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering or technology.
- Master’s degree in science, arts or social sciences.
- Four-year bachelor’s degree in science.
- M.Pharm with first class, or MBBS/BDS with 60% – these two only for Bioscience and Biomedical Engineering.
Along with the degree you must satisfy one of these additional requirements:
- A valid GATE or GPAT score in the subject listed for your department in the institute’s Table 1 (for example, CSE needs GATE in CS/EC/EE/MA/ST/DA; Electrical needs GATE in EE/EC/IN/CS/DA; Mathematics needs GATE in MA/ST or CSIR-UGC NET in Mathematical Sciences).
- CSIR/UGC NET (JRF, Assistant Professor, or PhD-only), or an NBHM, DBT, ICAR, ICMR, ICPR, DAE or DST INSPIRE fellowship.
- Two years of relevant professional experience – teaching in degree colleges and above, or research experience in industry, academic institutions or research organisations.
- A B.Tech from an IIT with CPI/CGPA 8.0 or more.
- NEET-PG, INI-CET or NEET-MDS scores, applicable only to Bioscience and Biomedical Engineering.
Two conditions are easy to miss. A candidate claiming eligibility on the first route (master’s or bachelor’s degree) must have a GATE qualification in the relevant discipline, and a DST INSPIRE candidate gets only provisional admission until the sponsorship or fellowship is confirmed. An ongoing degree can also be counted if you graduate before the programme starts.
Fellowship and admission categories
The institute fellowship is paid only in Category A (Institute Fellowship), to full-time scholars who stay on campus, as per Ministry of Education norms. The page does not print a monthly amount, so confirm the current MoE rate before you budget. Categories B to F receive no institute fellowship:
- A. Institute Fellowship – full-time scholar on campus for the duration of the programme; assistantship as per MoE norms.
- B. Sponsored full-time – you hold a research fellowship from a recognised funding agency (CSIR, UGC, NBHM, DBT, ICAR, ICMR, ICPR, or DST INSPIRE) or your employer sponsors you; sponsorship certificate and employer undertaking required.
- C. Sponsored part-time – professionally employed with at least 2 years in the same organisation, and the organisation must be within a 75 km radius of IIT Bhilai; No Objection Certificate and relief for coursework required.
- D. External full-time and E. External part-time – for people working at least 2 years in a recognised industry, academic establishment or research laboratory with R&D facilities; you get a supervisor from your organisation and a co-supervisor from IIT Bhilai.
- F. Project Staff – only candidates working on an externally funded project at IIT Bhilai, with at least one year of project duration left and an NoC from the Dean (R&D).
- Applicants in categories A to E can opt for the Prime Minister’s Research Fellowship (PMRF) or the Visvesvaraya PhD Scheme in the application form, subject to seat availability, and the category changes to Sponsored full-time if selected.
- Product-based PhD is available under all categories.
- Hostel accommodation for categories B to F is provided subject to availability.
Application fee and how to apply
- Register on the IIT Bhilai PhD application portal. A fresh registration is needed for each programme you apply to – and you may apply under only one category (Institute Fellowship, Sponsored Part-Time and so on).
- Pay the fee through State Bank Collect only: Rs 100 for SC/ST/PwD and female candidates, Rs 200 for all others. In SBI Collect choose “Educational Institutions”, search for “IIT BHILAI”, then select “PhD Application Fee 2026-27-W Semester” and enter your registration ID.
- Add the SBI Collect reference number to the application – the page says to do this after 48 hours from generating the reference.
- Finalise the application, which is mandatory. After finalisation you cannot edit, add or modify anything, and the application number is generated – download and keep the submitted form.
- Candidates applying to more than one department must apply and pay separately for each. If you have no professional experience, the page allows a blank PDF in the “Experience documents” field so the form can be submitted.
Documents to carry to the written test and interview
- Photo ID card.
- Printed copy of the online application submitted.
- Thesis, dissertation, report or publications.
- All original certificates and mark-sheets.
- Call letter.
Selection process
Departments screen the applications against their own Table 1 criteria, and shortlisted candidates appear in department-wise lists on the IIT Bhilai website (the page currently shows shortlist notices for Mechanical, Liberal Arts, Electrical, ECE, Bioscience, Mathematics, Materials, CSE, Physics, DSAI and Chemistry). Selection is through the entrance test and interview held in the first week of December 2026, and admission is offered subject to supervisor and seat availability.
For any query, write to [email protected]. Always confirm dates on the official page before travelling – the institute states that the schedule is tentative and changes are posted on the website only.
