Minimum qualification for full-time PhD admission at IIT Delhi
- M.Tech / M.E. / M.D. / M.Des. / M.B.A. (through CAT) or an equivalent degree with 60% marks or 6.00 CGPA on a 10-point scale – no national-level examination is required.
- M.Sc / M.B.A. / M.A. / M.B.B.S. or an equivalent degree with 60% marks or 6.00 CGPA, plus qualification in GATE, CSIR or UGC NET, JEST, ICAR, ICMR, a DST-INSPIRE fellowship or NBHM.

These are the institute’s minimum requirements; a department, centre or school can set higher short-listing criteria, and each research committee decides the qualifying degree disciplines and the acceptable GATE disciplines for its own programme. Candidates in the final semester or year of their qualifying degree can also apply if they expect to complete the degree requirements before the registration date, but their admission stays provisional until the certificates are verified.
Relaxations and national-exam waivers
- For SC, ST and PwD candidates the minimum performance is relaxed from 60% to 55% (CGPA 6.00 to 5.50) for M.Tech, M.E., M.D., M.Des., M.B.A., M.Sc. and M.A. holders, and from 70% to 65% (CGPA 7.00 to 6.50) for B.E., B.Tech and four-year B.S. or B.Sc. holders.

(in person), integrated M.Tech or integrated M.Sc. programme with a CGPA of 8.00 or above, provided they obtain 8.00 at graduation.
- The waiver also applies to graduates of those CFTI programmes with a final graduation CGPA of more than 8.00, and to M.A. or M.Sc. graduates from IITs with a CGPA of 8.00 or above.
- Candidates with an M.B.B.S. qualification are treated as equivalent to M.Tech for assistantship purposes in the Centre for Biomedical Engineering, and M.B.A. holders can apply to the Ph.D. programme in the Department of Management Studies.

- Part-time candidates from outside the NCR, or more than 50 km from IIT Delhi, must satisfy a minimum residency requirement of six months, which a research committee may increase.
- Part-time candidates must submit a No Objection Certificate from their employer confirming that they may pursue studies part-time, will be relieved for the residency period, and can attend classes and devote time to research; sponsored candidates must submit a sponsorship certificate confirming study leave for at least three years (two years for M.Tech and equivalent holders).
