Iowa State University International Scholarships 2027: Up to $56,000

Iowa State University runs two separate international scholarship routes, and most students only need the automatic one. The International Student Excellence Award is credited on admission from your high school GPA and, for the top two tiers, your SAT or ACT score – there is no application. The International Merit Scholarship is a competitive award you apply for through the OneApp portal, and its fall priority deadline is 15 February 2027.

Iowa State University international scholarships 2027 - automatic Excellence Awards up to US$56,000 and merit awards up to US$40,000

Between the two, an international first-year student can hold up to US$56,000 over four years at the top tier, or US$40,000 through the merit route. The awards cannot be stacked with each other, so the choice is between a guaranteed automatic award and a competitive one – and that decision depends on your GPA and whether you have a test score.

The automatic International Student Excellence Award

This one is decided by the admissions office when your file is reviewed, using your high school GPA on a 4.0 scale and, for the top tiers, your SAT or ACT score. For first-year students the tiers are:

  • President’s Award – US$56,000 total, US$14,000 a year. SAT or ACT required.
  • Dean’s Award – US$48,000 total, US$12,000 a year. SAT or ACT required.
  • Innovator’s Award – US$40,000 total, US$10,000 a year. No test score needed, minimum GPA 3.70.
  • Launchpad Award – US$24,000 total, US$6,000 a year. No test score needed, GPA 3.50 to 3.69.

Transfer students have their own tiers: the Transfer Gold Scholar pays US$24,000 over up to three years (US$8,000 a year) at a transfer GPA of 3.70 or above, and the Transfer Cardinal Scholar pays US$12,000 (US$4,000 a year) at 3.50 to 3.69. Every Excellence Award runs for up to eight semesters for first-year students (six for transfers) or until the degree is completed, and the money can only be used for undergraduate tuition and fees.

The competitive International Merit Scholarship

  • First-year students: Award of Achievement up to US$40,000 in total, paid at US$5,000 to US$10,000 a year, and Award of Distinction up to US$16,000 in total, paid at US$2,000 to US$4,000 a year.
  • Transfer students: Achievement up to US$20,000 (US$5,000 to US$8,000 a year) and Distinction up to US$10,000 (US$2,000 to US$4,000 a year).
  • Selection is a holistic review of SAT or ACT scores and high school grades, and the university says the number of awards is limited, so this is genuinely competitive.
  • Funding runs for a maximum of eight semesters for first-year students and five semesters for transfers, or until the degree is completed.
  • You apply through the OneApp scholarship portal: complete the General Application first, then under Opportunities and Recommended pick the International Student Admissions Scholarship Application for your term.

Who is eligible

  • You must be offered admission to Iowa State as an international first-year or transfer student and be assessed international tuition.
  • You must accept the offer of admission by 1 May for a fall start, or 15 December for a spring start.
  • Admission itself needs a high school GPA equivalent to 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, four years of English, three years of science with at least two lab years, three years of maths including algebra and geometry, and two years of social studies.
  • SAT or ACT is not required for admission, but a 1200 on the SAT or a 25 composite on the ACT automatically satisfies the 3.0 GPA requirement – useful if your board results arrive late.
  • You need English proficiency test results, transcripts from every school or college attended, a passport copy, and a bank statement or sponsor letter showing one year’s expenses: US$52,000 for most majors, US$54,300 for Design majors and Animal Enterprise and Innovation.
  • The Excellence Award and the Merit Scholarship cannot be combined, and Excellence Awards cannot be combined with each other.

Renewal rules you should plan for

  • Keep a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 (the President’s Award needs 3.0).
  • Stay enrolled in at least 12 semester credits every semester, summer excluded.
  • Remain classified as an international student and keep paying international tuition.
  • Spend the money only on undergraduate tuition and fees – it is not a living-cost stipend.
  • The award stops at eight semesters (five for transfers) even if you take longer to finish.

Frequently asked questions

Are Iowa State scholarships available to Indian students?

Yes. Both routes are open to international students who are assessed international tuition, with no nationality list restricting them. The automatic Excellence Award needs no separate application, and the competitive Merit Scholarship is applied for through the OneApp portal.

Do I need to apply separately for the Iowa State Excellence Award?

No. Iowa State says the International Student Excellence Award is automatic for admitted international first-year and transfer students, decided from high school GPA and, for the President’s and Dean’s tiers, SAT or ACT scores. Your only action is to accept the admission offer by 1 May for fall or 15 December for spring.

What is the deadline for the Iowa State International Merit Scholarship?

15 February 2027 is the priority deadline for a fall start, with 1 May 2027 as the final deadline. Transfer students have a 1 March 2027 priority deadline. Spring starts use 15 November as the priority date and 15 December as the final date.

Can I hold the Excellence Award and the Merit Scholarship together?

No. Iowa State states that the Excellence Awards cannot be combined with each other or with the International Merit Scholarship, so you receive the single best award you qualify for rather than a total of several.

How much money can an Indian student get at Iowa State?

The largest automatic award is the President’s Award at US$14,000 a year for up to four years, which is US$56,000 in total. The merit route tops out at US$10,000 a year and US$40,000 in total. Both are credits against undergraduate tuition and fees, not cash for living costs.

Does Iowa State require SAT or ACT for international students?

Not for admission. However, the President’s and Dean’s Excellence tiers and the merit scholarship review use SAT or ACT scores, so a score can move you to a bigger award – a 1200 SAT or 25 ACT also automatically meets the 3.0 GPA admission requirement.
