How admission to a JNU PhD programme works
JNU admits PhD candidates through three routes: the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) of UGC/CSIR in all three categories as per the UGC public notice dated 27 March 2024; the JRF of UGC, CSIR, ICMR, DBT and NBHM; and the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE). The university states that candidates who have only the educational qualification but have not qualified NET, JRF or GATE in the relevant subject – or the reverse – are not eligible for admission.
- A candidate can opt for a maximum of three fields of study in order of preference in the online form, and the options once exercised are final.
- For the 2026-27 session only the UGC/CSIR NET percentile of the June 2025 examination onwards is taken into account; previous NET percentiles and scores are not considered.
- The relevant NET subject must match the subject prescribed by the school, centre or special centre you apply to, so check the e-Prospectus entry for that programme before applying.
- Reservation of seats for SC/ST/OBC(NCL)/EWS/PwD candidates follows Government of India policy.
- No offline application is entertained for any PhD programme.
Eligibility for JNU PhD admission 2026-27
Along with the national-level test score, you must hold the educational qualification prescribed against each PhD programme in the JNU e-Prospectus 2026-27. Across the programmes the qualifying degree is normally a master’s degree with a minimum of 55% marks or the equivalent grade, and where a centre accepts a 4-year/8-semester bachelor’s degree route the requirement rises – for example, a minimum of 75% marks in aggregate for some science programmes. Because the bar differs from centre to centre, read the entry for your subject before you apply.
Foreign national candidates apply under a separate category, and a foreign national applicant has to submit a statement of purpose for the PhD programme.
JNU PhD admission through the JRF category
Candidates who hold a JRF have a separate route. They must fulfil the minimum eligibility criteria prescribed by the school, centre or special centre and must have qualified the JRF of UGC/CSIR in the relevant NET subject, or the JRF of ICMR, DBT or NBHM in the relevant subject. Such candidates apply separately in online mode for the JRF category according to the JRF intake, and they appear for the viva-voce with 100% weightage – selection is purely on the viva-voce performance.
Two exclusions matter here. Candidates awarded Lectureship/Assistant Professorship without JRF in the CSIR/UGC examination are not eligible under the JRF category, and neither are candidates holding the National Fellowship for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Classes or PwD on the basis of a lectureship/assistant professorship without JRF. DST INSPIRE fellows are also not eligible under the JRF category.
