What is the TIFR Graduate School GS-2027 admission?
TIFR runs its own nationwide entrance test, the GS-2027 written test, for admission to research programmes that start in August 2027. You apply for a hall ticket for the test, and the departments, centres and schools of TIFR then shortlist candidates for interviews between February and May.
The programmes on offer are PhD and Integrated PhD (I-PhD) in Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science and Learning / Information and Data Sciences, Mathematics, Physics, Physics of Life and Science Education. The work is spread across TIFR Mumbai, the National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS) and the International Centre for Theoretical Sciences (ICTS) in Bengaluru, the Centre for Applicable Mathematics (CAM) in Bengaluru, the National Centre for Radio Astrophysics (NCRA) in Pune, and TIFR Hyderabad.
TIFR fellowship amount: Rs 37,000 to Rs 42,000 a month
The official advertisement gives the exact stipend figures:
- PhD students: a monthly fellowship of Rs 37,000, enhanced to Rs 42,000 after registration for the PhD.
- I-PhD students: Rs 25,000 per month in the first year. On satisfactory performance it is enhanced to Rs 37,000 from the second year and to Rs 42,000 after registration for the PhD.
- Hostel accommodation or HRA is provided, as applicable.
The I-PhD is a combined master’s plus doctoral programme. Students who complete it successfully are awarded an MSc degree in addition to the PhD, and they may also exit with the MSc if the subject board’s requirements are met – the intention to exit has to be declared by the end of the second year and the MSc requirements completed by the end of the third year.
TIFR GS 2027 eligibility
The advertisement states that candidates holding a 4-year undergraduate degree with 75% aggregate or more may apply directly to the PhD programme instead of the I-PhD. Scores from GATE, JEST, CSIR, DBT, ICMR and UGC JRF examinations may also be considered by individual programmes, and the best score is taken if you also appear for the GS-2027 test.
