What is the University of Auckland-IIT Doctoral Scholarship in Engineering?
The scholarship was established in 2020 and is funded by the Faculty of Engineering. Its intention is to support doctoral students studying under a University of Auckland-Indian Institute of Technology Dual, Joint or Cotutelle PhD Agreement, on an agreed topic in the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Auckland.
It is a targeted award for candidates who move between an IIT and Auckland as part of a joint doctoral programme, so the practical route is to be admitted to one of these UoA-IIT partnership PhD programmes in the first place.
Value: what the scholarship covers
- A stipend of up to NZ$25,000 a year for up to 24 months, paid in fortnightly instalments while you are undertaking your PhD study in New Zealand.
- Compulsory fees covered for up to 36 months for international students who are eligible to study under the domestic fees policy.
- Compulsory international student health insurance during your studies in New Zealand (covered for up to 24 months while you are in New Zealand).
- The scholarship is tax-free as long as the funds are used for study-related costs and living costs.
- Tenure of up to 36 months.
Eligibility: who can apply
According to the official regulations, to be considered you must:
- Be a full-time international student who is eligible to pay domestic PhD fees.
- Be applying for, or admitted to, a University of Auckland-IIT Dual, Joint or Cotutelle PhD programme in the Faculty of Engineering.
- Have a grade point equivalent (GPE) of 7.50 or above in your most recent qualifying programme for doctoral study.
- Be starting the doctoral programme – students who have already begun their doctoral programme at the University of Auckland are not eligible.
Selection is based on academic merit, including your performance in your most recent qualifying programme, any coursework in your IIT PhD programme, academic references, CV, research and publication record, and the standing of the institution where you completed your qualifying programme.
How the scholarship is awarded
- Apply for a University of Auckland-IIT Dual, Joint or Cotutelle PhD in the Faculty of Engineering, on an agreed topic.
- You are considered for the scholarship automatically at the time of that application – there is no separate scholarship form.
- Nomination is made to the Scholarships Office, and the award is made by the University of Auckland Council on the recommendation of a Selection Committee from the Faculty of Engineering.
- If you are awarded the scholarship, you must enrol within six months of the date of your unconditional programme offer, otherwise the scholarship offer lapses.
Important conditions to know
- The scholarship may not be held concurrently with a University of Auckland Doctoral Scholarship, or with any other New Zealand government or foreign government-funded scholarship held while you are in New Zealand.
- It may be held with another study award where that award’s regulations permit and the University Council approves, up to an additional maximum of 50% of the stipend value.
- Paid work, inside or outside the University, must not exceed 500 hours per scholarship year.
- Payments begin no earlier than your enrolment date and are made only while you are in New Zealand.
- International recipients may be outside New Zealand for a maximum total of twelve months during their doctorate, and only for research purposes, to keep domestic-fee eligibility.
