IIT Ropar PhD Admission 2027: Last Date 31 October

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Ropar, Rupnagar, Punjab, has opened applications for Ph.D. admission to the 2nd semester of the academic year 2026-27 (January 2027 intake). Three department calls are live at the same time, and each one has its own last date: Computer Science & Engineering (31 October 2026, 5:30 PM IST), Humanities & Social Sciences (25 October 2026) and Chemical Engineering, Round-III (25 October 2026).

Full-time regular scholars selected under the institute-fellowship category receive the Institute Research Assistantship as per Ministry of Education, Government of India norms. The department brochures do not print a monthly figure, so this page does not quote one – the HSS department does additionally offer conference grants of up to Rs 2 lakh for national and international conferences.

The CSE brochure states the schedule plainly: last date of receipt of online applications 31st October, 2026, 5:30 PM IST, notification of shortlisted candidates on 4 November 2026 and the written test and interview on 19 and 20 November 2026. Candidates have to attend the test and interview in person. Merely meeting the minimum eligibility does not guarantee a call – departments may apply additional academic-performance shortlisting depending on the number of applications.

IIT Ropar PhD eligibility: minimum performance required

M.Tech / M.E. or equivalent, 5-year Integrated Master’s, 5-year BS-MS dual degree	60% marks or 6.00 CGPA on a 10-point scale for General / OBC-NCL / EWS, 55% or 5.5 CGPA for SC/ST/PwD. No national-level examination required.
M.Sc / M.A / MBA or equivalent Master’s, PG diploma in management with a relevant bachelor’s degree (minimum five years of UG + PG), or M.B.B.S	60% marks or 6.00 CGPA (55% or 5.5 CGPA for SC/ST/PwD) plus a qualified GATE / CSIR-UGC NET / DST-INSPIRE / JEST / NBHM or another national fellowship.
B.E. / B.Tech / BS or an equivalent four-year programme	60% marks or 6.00 CGPA (55% or 5.5 CGPA for SC/ST/PwD) plus a qualified national-level examination (GATE / CSIR-UGC NET / DST-INSPIRE / JEST / NBHM or another national fellowship).
CFTI exemption	The national-examination requirement is waived for candidates from Centrally Funded Technical Institutes who completed a B.Tech / B.E. / Integrated M.Tech / Integrated M.Sc or another four-year JEE-based programme with a CGPA of 7.5 or above (75% aggregate marks where marks are the primary mode of evaluation).

Reservation is applicable to SC / ST / OBC-NCL / EWS / PwD candidates as per Government of India rules. The HSS department also states that JRF candidates are encouraged to apply, and that part-time or external-registration (ERP) candidates need work experience and an NOC or sponsorship letter from the employer.

Application fee and how to apply

Application fee: Rs 100 for women candidates and SC/ST/PwD candidates, Rs 200 for all other candidates. The fee is non-refundable.
Payment is made through SBI SB Collect (onlinesbi.com). Applications without online payment details are not considered.
Fill the online form from the institute’s PhD admissions page (link in the Official links section below). A printed copy of the application is not required to be sent.
Candidates called for the written test or interview must carry a printed copy of the submitted application along with the original and photocopies of all uploaded certificates.
OBC-NCL and EWS certificates must be uploaded with the online application; on selection, the certificate produced at registration must have been issued after 31 March 2026.
Incomplete applications are rejected – upload legible copies of every document.

PhD categories available at IIT Ropar

Regular Full-Time – Institute Fellowship: entitled to the Institute Research Assistantship / Fellowship as per Ministry of Education, Government of India norms.
Regular Full-Time – Govt. / Semi-Govt. fellowship awardees: for candidates who already hold a JRF or SRF from a government agency.
Fellowship through Project (FTP): paid from the sanctioned amount of the project, subject to the funding agency’s eligibility conditions.
Self-Financed (SF) and Sponsored (SW): no financial support from the institute; sponsored candidates need a sponsorship letter from the employer.
Part-Time / External Registration Programme (ERP): for professionally employed candidates, with 2 years of full-time service completed as on the application deadline and an organisation that has been in existence for at least five years.
IIT Ropar regular staff: staff admitted to the PhD programme are not entitled to the institute fellowship.
