Berea College in Kentucky, USA has not charged tuition since 1892, and it funds the whole cost of attendance – tuition, housing, food and fees – for every student it admits. The international application deadline for the Fall 2027 intake is 30 November 2026, and there is no separate scholarship form: the admission application itself puts you in the funding pool.
This page covers what the Berea funding actually pays for, the exact test scores Indian applicants need, the documents the portal asks for, and the dates you have to work backwards from. Every figure below is taken from Berea College’s own admissions pages, linked at the end.

What the Berea funding covers
Berea stopped charging tuition in 1892. From Fall 2027 the college says it will become the first college in the United States to give every enrolled student a fully funded, no-loan degree. In Berea’s own words, the college funds tuition, housing, food and fees, and if you are admitted you are funded for all four years, not just the first one.
The package is assembled from Berea’s own funding, federal and state grants, and other scholarships, and it is designed to cover the cost of attendance without loans. Berea also says it funds its “Premier Perks”:
- A laptop
- A summer internship
- Professional clothing
- Conference attendance
One cost is not covered by the award: after you are admitted you must pay a US$2,200 deposit before the college issues your I-20. Berea says that if the full deposit is genuinely out of reach, your situation is considered and the amount is adjusted as appropriate.
Who can apply: eligibility
- You must be an international applicant who will enrol in the Fall term – new international students are not admitted for the spring term.
- You must not already hold a bachelor’s degree. Berea admits only undergraduate students and offers no master’s or PhD programmes, so a graduate degree holder is not eligible.
- You need a complete application: incomplete applications are not considered at all.
- You may submit only one application per academic year, but you can apply again in a later year if you are not admitted.
- You do not need to submit bank statements – Berea’s International Financial Questionnaire does not require them.
Selection is holistic. The International Admissions Committee reads academic credentials, financial need, ambition and sense of purpose, and recommendations. Berea says the personal essay matters a great deal, because it is how the committee understands who you are and what you plan to do.
Be realistic about the odds: Berea admits about 40 or fewer new international students each year, and around 120 international students (nearly 10% of the student body) are enrolled from more than 70 countries. Berea states that it is rare for more than one student from any single country to be offered admission in a year.
English proficiency and test scores
Every applicant must submit a score from at least one of these tests – Berea says there are no exceptions to this requirement, and it will almost never consider a score from a test taken more than two years ago:
| TOEFL | 520 paper-based, 190 computer-based, 68 internet-based |
| IELTS | 6.0 overall, with 5.0 in each area |
| Duolingo English Test | 95 |
| SAT | 980 combined |
| ACT | 19 composite |
Berea does not run an ESL programme, so you have to be able to follow lectures, read the set texts and write assignments in English from day one. If your score is close to the line, sitting the test again and improving it is the single cheapest way to strengthen a second application.
Documents you need
- The online application form, submitted through Berea’s application portal.
- Academic transcripts and school records covering your secondary education.
- Your English proficiency score (TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo, SAT or ACT).
- The International Financial Questionnaire – no bank statements required.
- A personal essay that explains your purpose in applying and your plans.
- Recommendations, which the committee reads as part of the holistic review.
- A passport bio page and a medical history form, once you are admitted and before the I-20 is issued.
How to apply, step by step
- Open the international applicant checklist on Berea’s site and read the full list before you start – every item is submitted through the online application portal.
- Take your English test early enough for the score to reach Berea well before 30 November 2026, and make sure the test is not more than two years old.
- Write the personal essay first; it carries a lot of weight in a pool of hundreds of applicants for fewer than 40 seats.
- Submit the application and the International Financial Questionnaire together so the file is complete – incomplete files are not reviewed.
- Watch for the confirmation email once your file is processed, and for the final decision, which Berea releases no later than 31 March.
- If you are admitted, pay the US$2,200 deposit, submit the passport bio page and medical history form, and Berea issues your I-20 for the student visa.
