Vanderbilt University Scholarships for International Students 2027

Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee runs one of the largest full-tuition merit programmes in the United States, and international first-year applicants are explicitly eligible for all of it. The Office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships says international freshmen can apply for every Vanderbilt merit-based scholarship, and that over 225 recipients of its two signature awards get a guaranteed full-tuition package plus a summer stipend.

Vanderbilt University scholarships for international students 2027 - full tuition merit awards, apply by 1 December 2026

The catch is the calendar, not the eligibility. Every Vanderbilt merit scholarship application for students entering in 2027 must be submitted online by 1 December 2026, and the awards are decided from the top 1 percent of first-year applicants. This guide sets out what each award covers, what international students must file for need-based aid alongside it, and the exact steps in the MyAppVU portal.

What Vanderbilt costs before any scholarship

Vanderbilt publishes the 2026-27 figures, which are the right baseline for a 2027 entry application. These are the direct costs billed by the university for a full-time undergraduate living on campus.

TuitionUS$69,822
HousingUS$15,170
FoodUS$8,520
Student support feeUS$3,384
Total direct cost of attendanceUS$96,896
Indirect allowances (books and materials US$1,100, personal US$1,998, transport varies)US$3,098

That is why a full-tuition award matters: it removes US$69,822 a year, roughly INR 61 lakh at current rates, from a four-year bill. Housing, food and the student support fee stay payable unless a need-based grant covers them, and the Ingram award is the one that also pays fees and on-campus housing.

Cornelius Vanderbilt Scholarship: full tuition plus a summer stipend

  • Value: full tuition for four years, plus a one-time summer stipend for an immersive experience after the sophomore or junior year.
  • Top-up: Vanderbilt adds need-based aid on top if your demonstrated need is larger than the full-tuition amount, so the award does not cap your aid package.
  • Renewal: automatic each year as long as you keep at least a 3.0 GPA.
  • Selection: academic achievement, intellectual promise, and leadership and contribution outside the classroom. The committee reads the whole first-year admission file together with the scholarship application. For Blair School of Music applicants, audition scores count as well.
  • Result: recipients are notified by mail and email by the end of March 2027.

The Cornelius Vanderbilt application is optional, but the university states that preference is given to students who apply. The same application also puts you in the pool for the smaller additional merit awards, so skipping it costs you two chances at once.

Ingram Scholars Program: tuition, fees, housing and a service stipend

  • Value: full tuition, all required fees, and the value of on-campus housing each year, plus a stipend for a special summer service project.
  • Obligation: about 20 hours a month of community service during the academic year, one summer service project after the sophomore year, and weekly large and small group meetings.
  • Renewal: annually through the senior year with a 3.0 minimum GPA and fulfilment of the service requirements.
  • Selection: commitment to civic-minded service, an entrepreneurial spirit, strength of personal character and leadership potential. Finalists are interviewed by the selection committee.
  • Result: recipients are notified in the second half of May 2027.

Ingram is the heavier commitment of the two signature awards and the better fit if you already run a community project. It is also the richer package on paper, because fees and on-campus housing are covered on top of tuition.

Additional merit scholarships from US$8,000 a year

Beyond the two signature programmes, Vanderbilt offers a limited number of merit awards starting from US$8,000 per year. Candidates are identified by the financial aid office, and the university encourages students who want to be considered to submit the Cornelius Vanderbilt application with the scholarship-specific questions answered.

  • Carell Family Scholarship: full tuition and fees, for students who held part-time employment in high school and demonstrate financial need.
  • Clark Scholars Program: US$20,000 per year for meritorious engineering undergraduates with demonstrated financial need, plus assistance for summer immersive experiences.
  • Curb Leadership Scholarship: US$8,000 for students who put creativity at the centre of their work and use it to transform their communities.
  • Fred Russell-Grantland Rice scholarships: grouped with the additional awards and applied for through the same Cornelius Vanderbilt form.
  • National Merit: finalists who name Vanderbilt first choice and also win a Vanderbilt merit scholarship are guaranteed an extra US$2,000 a year from all sources; finalists without another Vanderbilt award receive up to US$6,000 a year in total. Transfer students cannot be named Vanderbilt National Merit Scholars.

All Vanderbilt merit scholarships are renewable for four years of undergraduate study as long as the recipient maintains satisfactory academic performance, and financial need is not a factor unless the particular award says so.

Need-based aid for international students: what to file

Merit money and need-based aid are separate tracks at Vanderbilt, and Indian families usually need both. The university is need-aware for international citizens: applying for aid can be a factor in the admission decision, and the aid budget for internationals is limited. Eligible non-citizens, such as green-card holders, are treated like US citizens and are not affected.

  • Vanderbilt offers renewable need-based financial aid to a limited number of international first-year undergraduate applicants.
  • The only document required at submission is the College Board CSS Profile showing your sources of financial support. The office may ask for more later to verify it.
  • FAFSA is a US federal form for citizens and eligible non-citizens, so it does not apply to an Indian applicant filing from abroad.
  • If you do not request need-based aid, you must be ready to finance the full four-year cost privately or through a sponsor.
  • Aid calendar priority dates for 2027-28 entry: 1 November 2026 for Early Decision I, 1 January 2027 for Early Decision II, and 1 February 2027 for Regular Decision.

How to apply for Vanderbilt scholarships, step by step

  1. Submit your first-year admission application through the Common Application, the Coalition Application or the QuestBridge Application. The scholarship application comes after this, never before.
  2. Within two to three business days you receive an email from the Office of Undergraduate Admissions explaining how to create your MyAppVU account.
  3. Open the Scholarship tab in MyAppVU and select the signature scholarship or scholarships you want to apply for. You may apply for both Ingram and Cornelius Vanderbilt.
  4. Write your scholarship essays and upload them as a PDF or Word document through MyAppVU. Check the file carefully: Vanderbilt does not accept corrections after submission.
  5. Submit before 1 December 2026. You should see a date of submission and a green check mark immediately; if the check mark is missing after 24 hours, the upload did not go through.
  6. If you want need-based aid as well, file the CSS Profile by the priority date for your admission round.

Documents and preparation checklist

  • A finished first-year admission application, submitted before the scholarship deadline so MyAppVU exists in time.
  • Scholarship essays uploaded as PDF or Word files, with the additional scholarship questions answered if you want the Carell, Clark, Curb or Fred Russell-Grantland Rice awards.
  • The College Board CSS Profile, if you are requesting need-based aid.
  • Evidence for the specific awards: part-time work history for the Carell Family Scholarship, and engineering admission for the Clark Scholars Program.
  • A record of sustained community service if you are applying for Ingram, since the program expects about 20 hours a month and a summer project.

Frequently asked questions

Can international students get Vanderbilt scholarships?

Yes. Vanderbilt states that international freshmen applicants are eligible to apply for all Vanderbilt merit-based scholarships, and the awards do not depend on citizenship. Need-based aid is separate, limited for international citizens and need-aware in admission.

What is the last date to apply for Vanderbilt scholarships in 2027?

1 December 2026 for first-year applicants, covering the Cornelius Vanderbilt Scholarship, the Ingram Scholars Program and the additional merit awards. Students already in their first year at Vanderbilt have until 28 February 2027 for Ingram.

How much is the Cornelius Vanderbilt Scholarship worth?

Full tuition for four years plus a one-time summer stipend, with need-based aid added if your demonstrated need is higher than the tuition amount. It renews with a 3.0 GPA.

Does the Ingram Scholars Program cover more than tuition?

Yes. Ingram covers full tuition, all required fees and the value of on-campus housing each year, plus a stipend for a summer service project, in exchange for about 20 hours a month of service and one summer service project.

Do I need SAT or ACT scores for the Vanderbilt scholarship?

The scholarship pages do not set a test score rule. Selection is based on the admission file, the scholarship application and, for Ingram finalists, an interview, so check Vanderbilt’s undergraduate admission page for the testing policy that applies to your intake.

Is Vanderbilt need-blind for Indian students?

No. Vanderbilt is need-blind in admission generally, but need-aware for international citizens who ask for financial aid, and the need-based budget for internationals is limited. Merit scholarships are not affected by that policy.

Can I apply for both the Ingram and Cornelius Vanderbilt scholarships?

Yes. Both applications sit in the Scholarship tab of MyAppVU and both close on 1 December 2026. Applying for Cornelius Vanderbilt also puts you in front of the additional merit scholarship committees.
