Berea College Tuition-Free Scholarship for International Students 2027

Berea College in Kentucky is the only college in the United States that charges no tuition to any student, and admitted international students get the same deal as Americans: financial aid and scholarships that cover 100 percent of tuition, housing, food and fees. From Fall 2027 the college goes further and guarantees that tuition, housing, food, fees and supplies are all covered, with no loans, as the country’s first fully funded degree.

What the Berea award covers

  • Tuition, housing, food and fees: all admitted international students receive financial aid and scholarships covering 100 percent of these costs.
  • From Fall 2027: Berea guarantees 100 percent of tuition, housing, food, fees and supplies, without loans, for all students, which the college describes as the nation’s first fully funded, no-loan degree.
  • Laptop: every admitted student is issued a laptop at no cost and keeps it after graduation.
  • Professional clothing: a US$400 stipend for juniors and seniors to buy interview and work clothing.
  • Internships: an average of US$4,000 per student to fund internship experiences.
  • Work Program earnings: most international students work 15 to 20 hours a week and earn over US$2,000 during the school year, and can work up to 40 hours a week in holidays and summer.

The US$2,200 deposit, explained

Berea is tuition-free but not cost-free at the door. Accepted international students are expected to pay a US$2,200 deposit to confirm enrolment, and the I-20 needed for the student visa is issued only after that deposit and the required forms, such as the passport bio page and medical history form, are submitted.

  • The deposit is not lost money: Berea says it can be used by the student for certain expenses during the four years of enrolment.
  • Students who cannot pay all or part of the US$2,200 can ask for additional financial aid. The college says it has sources of aid to help cover the deposit depending on the family’s circumstances, and that the amount can be adjusted.
  • Personal expenses and travel are not covered by the scholarship, so the Work Program earnings are meant to help with day-to-day costs.

Who is eligible

  • You must meet university entrance requirements in your own country and present outstanding secondary or leaving exam results, such as CBSE or state board Class 12 results.
  • Berea serves students with high financial need, and it assesses financial eligibility separately from academics. The college publishes household income guidelines by family size and asks applicants to check their financial eligibility before applying.
  • You must submit one approved test score: TOEFL, IELTS, SAT, ACT or Duolingo. There are no exceptions to this requirement.
  • Students who already hold a bachelor’s degree cannot be admitted, and Berea offers no master’s programmes.
  • New international students can only start in the Fall term, so there is no spring intake.
  • International transfer applicants are considered, but Berea reserves its very limited places for students who have had no opportunity to study at university level.

The college is academically competitive: Berea says the average ACT score of its students is about 25, and more than half of its first-year students ranked in the top fifth of their high school class.

Minimum test scores

TOEFL68 internet-based, 190 computer-based, 520 paper-based
IELTS6.0 overall with 5.0 in each area
SAT980 combined score
ACT19 composite
Duolingo English Test95

Berea says it will almost never consider a score from a test taken more than two years ago, so plan the test date close to the application. Applicants to the Nursing major need a higher English score: TOEFL iBT 83 with 26 in the spoken section.

How to apply to Berea College

  1. Check your financial eligibility against Berea’s household income guidelines before you start, because the college admits only students it is designed to serve.
  2. Complete the online international application through the Berea admissions portal and submit every required item. Incomplete applications are not considered.
  3. Upload your secondary school records, one approved test score and your recommendations.
  4. Write a strong personal essay. Berea says the International Admissions Committee uses it to understand who you are and why you want to study there, and recommends giving it very careful attention.
  5. Submit everything by 30 November. Berea states plainly that it cannot grant extensions beyond the deadline; late applicants must apply for the next academic year.
  6. If you are admitted, pay the US$2,200 deposit, complete the passport and medical forms, and receive your I-20 for the visa interview.

Important dates for the Fall 2027 intake

  • 30 November – international application deadline for admission and financial aid.
  • 31 March – final admission decisions released. Berea’s deadlines page lists mid-March for international decisions and its FAQ says decisions will be released no later than 31 March.
  • 1 May – commitment deadline for admitted students.
  • After the deposit and forms are received – I-20 issued for the US student visa.

How competitive is it for Indian applicants

  • Berea admits about 40 or fewer new international students each year.
  • About 120 international students are enrolled in a typical year, nearly 10 percent of the student body, from more than 70 countries.
  • The college says it is rare for more than one student from any single country to be offered admission in a year, so an Indian applicant is effectively competing for one or two places.
  • Selection is holistic: academic credentials, financial need, ambition and sense of purpose, and recommendations all count.
