Occidental College in Los Angeles is one of the few liberal arts colleges in the United States that says out loud how thin its international aid budget is. Merit scholarships are open to every international applicant automatically, need-based aid exists but reaches only a handful of students a year, and the college states plainly that an award for a non-US citizen is not guaranteed to meet full demonstrated need.

That honesty is useful. It tells an Indian applicant where the real chances are: merit money, an Early Decision application that comes with a guaranteed minimum scholarship, and a free financial form that every international applicant must file whether or not they are asking for aid.

What Occidental offers international applicants
Occidental runs two separate pots of money for international students, and they behave very differently.
- Merit scholarships: every international applicant is considered automatically and no separate application is needed. The college says it offers merit scholarships to many international students each year, judged on academic performance, extracurricular involvement and personal achievement.
- Need-based aid: available to a small number of international students each year, which Occidental itself describes as typically no more than a handful. It is awarded on the family’s ability to contribute, assessed from income and assets.
The college also warns that aid packages for non-US citizens are not guaranteed to meet full demonstrated need. So the practical reading is: a merit award is realistic, a need-based grant is a long shot, and neither should be assumed before the award letter is in hand.
The form every international applicant must file
Occidental does not use the CSS Profile for international citizens. Instead it uses its own Occidental International Student Financial Form, which appears in the applicant status portal 4 to 5 days after you apply and takes a couple of minutes to complete.
Two details matter more than they look:
- The form is required even if you are not applying for need-based aid. It is the college’s record of how the degree will be funded.
- You may submit it after the application deadline, but Occidental asks you to do it promptly to avoid delays in reviewing the application. For an aid applicant, filing it late is the same as not asking for aid.
Before it issues the Form I-20 for an F-1 visa, Occidental verifies the financial resources of every international applicant. A bank statement or sponsor letter that does not match the numbers on the form is the most common reason an otherwise complete file stalls.
Cost of attendance at Occidental, 2026-27
Occidental publishes three versions of the budget – living on campus, living off campus and living with a parent. For an international student the on-campus column is the realistic one, because F-1 students normally live on or near campus in the first year.
| Cost item, 2026-27 | Amount |
| Tuition | US$70,492 |
| Required fees | US$611 |
| Housing and meal plan (on campus) | US$21,022 (US$17,007 off campus, US$7,521 with a parent) |
| Direct costs, on campus | US$92,125 (US$88,110 off campus, US$78,624 with a parent) |
| Books and supplies | US$1,290 |
| Personal expenses | US$1,950 |
| Travel | Varies by distance; the aid budget allows US$3,240 |
| Total cost of attendance, on campus | US$95,365 (US$91,350 off campus, US$81,864 with a parent) |
Occidental’s average financial aid package across the student body is US$46,352 – useful context, but it is not an international figure. The college notes that most students receive some form of aid, while repeating that international need-based aid is extremely limited.
Health insurance is compulsory for non-US citizens
The Student Health Insurance Plan premium for 2026-27 is US$4,062. Domestic students can waive it with equivalent cover; non-US citizens cannot, so that amount belongs in every Indian applicant’s budget on top of the billed costs above unless a scholarship covers it.
Deadlines for fall 2027 entry
- Early Decision I: 1 November 2026, decision by mid-December. Binding.
- Early Action: 1 November 2026, decision by mid-January. Not binding.
- Early Decision II: 10 January 2027, decision by mid-February. Binding.
- Regular Decision: 10 January 2027, decision by mid-March.
Occidental’s international deadline table lists the admission deadline and the financial aid deadline as the same date in every round – 1 November or 10 January – so there is no separate later window for aid documents. Missing the aid date means being reviewed as a student who did not request aid.
The Occidental Commitment Scholarship for Early Decision applicants
Occidental attaches a guaranteed award to its binding plan. Every student admitted through Early Decision I or Early Decision II receives the Occidental Commitment Scholarship: a minimum US$20,000 annual scholarship, renewable for four years, US$80,000 in total.
No separate application is needed, and recipients are still considered for merit scholarships of higher value and for need-based aid. For an international applicant who is certain about Occidental, that is the single most reliable source of money in the whole package – but Early Decision is binding, so it should only be used where the family can pay the balance if need-based aid does not come through.
What Occidental expects the family to contribute
Occidental’s aid formula assumes every student contributes from summer earnings – US$2,650 for first-years – and counts 25% of student assets annually. Those two lines sit inside the need calculation, so a family that has saved in the student’s name should expect the award to reflect it.
How to apply, step by step
- Apply through the Common Application by 1 November 2026 or 10 January 2027, choosing Early Decision, Early Action or Regular Decision.
- Complete the Early Decision Agreement form in the Common App, signed by a parent or guardian and the school counsellor, if you choose a binding round.
- Watch the applicant portal for the Occidental International Student Financial Form, which appears 4 to 5 days after you apply, and submit it – even if you are not asking for need-based aid.
- Upload the bank statement or sponsor documentation that supports the funding you declare; the college verifies resources before issuing the I-20.
- No CSS Profile is needed. Do not pay for one for Occidental.
- Accept the aid award only after comparing the grant amount against the US$95,365 on-campus budget and the US$4,062 insurance premium.
