The University of Northern Iowa (UNI) is a public university in Cedar Falls, Iowa, and it is one of the cheaper US options for Indian students because its tuition sits below the national average and its main merit award is automatic. Every international applicant – first-year or transfer – is considered for the International Scholars Award of US$2,000 to US$5,000 a year without filling a scholarship form.

Two more awards need the UNI Scholarship Application, which opens on 1 July and has a 1 February priority deadline: the International Excel Award of US$1,000 to US$4,000 a year and the US$4,000 Presidential Scholar Award. For a 2027 start, the date to diarise is 1 February 2027.

Automatic awards for every international applicant
- International Scholars Award: US$2,000 to US$5,000 a year, renewable for up to four years. UNI says international students applying directly from high school or transferring are automatically considered, and no UNI Scholarship Application is needed.
- The International Scholars Award looks at academic achievement of 3.0 or higher, and SAT or ACT scores can also be considered. The stated qualification is a 3.0 GPA or an SAT of 1020 or higher.
- Transfer Scholar Award: US$1,000 for one year, non-renewable, for transfer applicants with a transfer GPA of 3.25 or higher. It is also automatic.
Both awards are listed for the Spring 2027 and Fall 2027 intakes, so an Indian student applying now for either intake is inside the window where they apply.
Competitive awards that need the UNI Scholarship Application
The UNI Scholarship Application is a separate form that opens on 1 July and carries a 1 February priority deadline. Students must be admitted before they can complete it.
| International Excel Award: US$1,000 to US$4,000 a year, up to four years | Needs proof of English proficiency, examples of leadership and service, and the scholarship application |
| Presidential Scholar Award: US$4,000 a year, up to four years | 3.80+ GPA and 29+ ACT (SAT 1340+), or 3.95+ GPA if admitted test-optional; run by the University Honors Program |
| Iowa Partner State Award: US$4,000 a year | Only for students from Iowa Economic Development Authority partner-state regions – not open to Indian applicants |
The Excel award is the realistic second step for Indian applicants: it is open to all new incoming degree-seeking students, freshmen and transfers included, and it stacks on top of the automatic International Scholars Award. The Presidential Scholar Award is aimed at high-school seniors with a 29+ ACT, so it mainly suits students who also have a strong SAT or ACT score.
Eligibility for Indian students
- You need a completed UNI application file for the intake you are joining – the automatic awards are considered on admission.
- A 3.0 GPA (or an SAT of 1020 or higher) keeps you in the International Scholars Award band; a 3.25+ transfer GPA gets the US$1,000 Transfer Scholar Award.
- The International Excel Award asks for proof of English proficiency plus evidence of leadership and service.
- The Presidential Scholar Award needs a 3.80+ GPA with a 29+ ACT or 1340+ SAT, or a 3.95+ GPA under test-optional review.
Dates to plan around
| UNI Scholarship Application opens | 1 July each year |
| Priority deadline for the scholarship application | 1 February 2027 |
| Intakes covered by the automatic awards | Spring 2027 and Fall 2027 |
1 February 2027 is the date that decides whether you are read in the priority round for the Excel and Presidential awards. Because UNI requires you to be admitted before the scholarship application can be completed, the admission file has to be in well before that date – not on it.
How to apply
- Apply for admission to UNI as an international student and complete the application file for the spring or fall intake.
- Submit your transcripts and English proficiency evidence with the admission application.
- For the automatic awards, do nothing else – the International Scholars Award or Transfer Scholar Award is decided from the admission file.
- After you are admitted, open the UNI Scholarship Application (it opens on 1 July) and submit it before 1 February for the priority round.
- Accept the offer, pay the deposit and complete the F-1 visa steps once the I-20 is issued.
What to keep ready
- Class 10 and class 12 mark sheets, plus transcripts for any college work already completed.
- English proficiency test evidence – UNI requires it with the admission file and again for the Excel award.
- A short list of leadership and service activities for the International Excel Award questions.
- Passport copy and proof of funds for the I-20 and visa stage.
