Amherst College is one of the small group of US liberal arts colleges that admit international students without looking at their financial need, and then meet 100 percent of the calculated need of everyone they admit. Amherst states it plainly: its need-blind policy covers all students, domestic and international, and its aid offers carry no loans. For an Indian student who needs almost full funding, that is a different proposition from a university that is need-aware for foreigners.

The calendar is what decides the outcome. The Early Decision deadline is 9 November 2026 – days away – and it is binding. The Regular Decision deadline is 5 January 2027, with the financial aid file due by 15 January 2027. The 2026-27 cost of attendance at Amherst is about US$98,460 a year, so this is one of the few places where a middle-income Indian family can be told a number it can actually pay. Every figure below comes from amherst.edu, linked at the end.

Need-blind admission and full need met, with no loans
Three separate promises sit behind an Amherst aid offer, and it is worth separating them because most universities keep only one. The first is need-blind admission for international students – your aid request plays no part in the admission decision. The second is that Amherst meets 100 percent of calculated need for international students who are admitted and apply for aid. The third is a no-loan policy: the aid offer is built from Amherst grant plus campus employment, so there is no packaged debt to repay from India after graduation.
The site’s own numbers show how much of the class this touches. In 2025-26, 82 percent of international students at Amherst received aid, and the average international award was US$84,000 or more. Across the whole college, 59 percent of students received scholarships and grants worth about US$84.7 million, and total need-based aid from all sources came to more than US$89 million. International students make up about 13 percent of the student body and come from more than 76 countries.
One consequence of a pure need-based system: Amherst awards no merit scholarships at all. There is no separate ‘international excellence’ prize to chase and no extra form that improves your odds beyond an honest financial picture. If your family can pay the full price, you will be expected to; if it cannot, Amherst’s aid office calculates what it can pay and covers the rest.
What Amherst actually costs in 2026-27
Amherst publishes the cost of attendance it uses to calculate need. The billed charges for 2026-27 are:
| Tuition | US$75,330 |
| Housing | US$10,980 |
| Meals (unlimited meal plan) | US$9,340 |
| Fees (student activities, US$355 a semester) | US$710 |
| Billed total | US$96,360 |
| Personal expenses (standard estimate) | US$1,800 |
| Travel and transportation | Varies by home country |
With the standard personal-expense estimate and a travel allowance, Amherst’s own worked example lands at US$98,460 for the year – that is the figure your aid is measured against. Two things sit outside it. Health insurance is not inside the budget, but students who take the college plan and receive aid get the cost added back and a Health Insurance Scholarship is available, so the insurance does not fall on the family. Books are already covered: required course materials are part of the comprehensive fee and reach students by the first day of class.
Amherst also says something most colleges do not put in writing – that a year of education there actually costs about US$140,000, and endowment income covers the gap between that and what students are charged. Read the US$98,460 as the price, not as the value.
Aid deadlines: ED 9 November 2026, RD 5 January 2027
Amherst separates the admission deadline from the financial aid deadline, and both matter. Admission first:
- Early Decision: application by 9 November 2026; decision by early-to-mid December 2026; binding if admitted
- Regular Decision: application by 5 January 2027; decision by late March 2027; reply due 1 May 2027
Then the aid file. Amherst publishes priority submission dates for the 2027-28 aid year, and the one that applies to you depends on the round you chose:
| QuestBridge applicants | 1 November 2026 |
| Early Decision applicants | 13 November 2026 |
| Regular Decision applicants | 15 January 2027 |
| Spring 2027 transfer applicants | 2 November 2026 |
| Fall 2027 transfer applicants | 1 March 2027 |
| Returning students (renewal) | 1 March 2027 |
The good news, and it is unusual: Amherst states that aid materials will be accepted and considered without penalty even if submitted after the priority date. That is not a licence to be late – a late file can still mean a late or incomplete offer – but it is materially more forgiving than universities that refuse aid to anyone who misses the deadline in the admission round.
Documents an Indian applicant files: CSS Profile code 3003
Amherst runs its institutional aid on the CSS Profile, and the international route is specific:
- CSS Profile for 2027-28, submitted to the College Board with Amherst’s CSS code 3003
- 2025 income tax returns for you and your parents, with all schedules and attachments, translated into English where needed, uploaded through the College Board’s IDOC service
- Non-filer statement if your parents were not required to file a return, along with earnings statements such as Form 16 or salary slips
- Both biological parents’ profiles if your parents are separated or divorced – each parent files a separate CSS Profile
- No FAFSA – Amherst states that Canadian and other international students do not complete the FAFSA; it is for US citizens and eligible non-citizens only
IDOC takes three to five business days to load documents into Amherst’s Financial Aid Portal, so upload about a week before the deadline and then check the portal’s documents link rather than assuming the file is complete. Business or partnership income needs the corporate or partnership return as well as the personal one.
English proficiency and testing for Indian applicants
Amherst is test-optional for the SAT and ACT in the 2026-27 cycle, but English proficiency is a separate, required layer for applicants whose last two years of school were not taught in English. The minimum scores Amherst strongly recommends:
- TOEFL iBT: 100 on the old scale for tests taken before 21 January 2026, or 5.5 on the new 1-6 scale
- Duolingo English Test: 130 or above
- IELTS Academic: 7.5 overall band
The waiver is narrow and mechanical: only the two most recent years of secondary school taught in English qualify. Amherst does not offer provisional admission, does not run an ESL programme and does not offer interviews to prospective students, so the essay and the school reports carry the weight that an interview would carry elsewhere. The application fee is US$75, and Amherst’s Quick Pass waiver is designed for first-generation and low-income applicants – worth requesting rather than paying.
Mistakes that cost Indian students Amherst aid
- Treating Early Decision as a free shot – it is binding, and an ED admit must withdraw every other application
- Submitting the CSS Profile only for the custodial parent when parents are separated, which leaves the household picture incomplete
- Converting rupee income to dollars differently on the CSS Profile and the tax documents, which is exactly what triggers verification
- Assuming Amherst has merit awards to win – it does not, so effort spent on ‘scholarship’ angles is wasted
- Applying after a bachelor’s degree – Amherst states it does not accept applicants who have already earned one
- Starting the IDOC upload on the deadline day, when it takes three to five business days to appear
