WashU Financial Aid for International Students 2027: 100% Need Met, No Loans

Washington University in St. Louis – WashU – meets 100 percent of demonstrated financial need without loans for every admitted undergraduate, and it extends that promise to international first-year applicants. On a US$90,000-plus annual price tag, a no-loan package is the difference between graduating debt free and graduating with a dollar loan you cannot service from India.

WashU Financial Aid 2027

The rule that trips up Indian applicants is timing, not merit. WashU states that international first-year students are eligible for financial aid only if they apply by the financial aid deadline for their admission round – if you skip it, you cannot ask for aid after you are admitted, or in any later year. For Fall 2027 entry the Regular Decision aid deadline is 1 February 2027, and the Early Action and Early Decision I deadline of 17 November 2026 is the nearest one on the calendar.

The no-loan promise and who it covers

WashU’s commitment is unusually explicit: it meets 100 percent of demonstrated financial need without loans for all admitted undergraduate students. Aid therefore comes as WashU scholarship and grant funding plus the student work component, not as a loan that accretes interest while you study.

The promise has two edges that Indian applicants must read carefully. First, it applies to first-year admission only – WashU states plainly that international applicants for transfer admission are not eligible to apply for financial aid at all. Second, it is a need-based promise: if you do not apply for aid in the admission round, WashU will not consider you for aid later in your degree, so a family that later loses income has no route back in.

Deadlines for Fall 2027 entry

WashU added an Early Action round alongside Early Decision I, Early Decision II and Regular Decision, which gives Indian students a non-binding early option for the first time. The dates below are from WashU’s Fall 2027 first-year table:

Early Action application2 November 2026
Early Decision I application2 November 2026
Early Decision II and Regular Decision application4 January 2027
Financial aid application – Early Action and ED I17 November 2026
Financial aid application – ED II11 January 2027
Financial aid application – Regular Decision1 February 2027
Scholarship applications for priority consideration16 December 2026

Note the gap between the admission deadline and the aid deadline: Early Action applicants have roughly two weeks after submitting the application to file the CSS Profile, and Regular Decision applicants have about four weeks. That gap is deliberate, and it is where files go incomplete.

Documents Indian applicants file at WashU

  • CSS Profile – required, and WashU’s CSS code is 6929
  • Noncustodial Parent Profile – required from both biological parent households when your parents are separated or divorced; a waiver request form exists if you have no contact with the noncustodial parent
  • Institutional aid form – if the CSS Profile fee itself is a barrier, WashU lets international applicants apply through its own form instead
  • No FAFSA – that is for US citizens and eligible non-citizens only

The CSS Profile costs US$25 for the first college and US$16 for each additional one, so filing for four or five US universities is a real expense. WashU’s institutional form is the honest route if that fee is the obstacle, not skipping the form entirely.

How WashU decides what your family can pay

Once the aid office has your CSS Profile it calculates an expected family contribution from your parents’ income, assets, family size and the number of children in college, and then builds an offer that closes the gap between that contribution and the cost of attendance. In practice the shape of the offer matters more than the headline: a package that meets need with scholarship and campus work leaves you with a payable number, while the same need met with a loan leaves you with debt to repay in rupees.

Two things improve your position without gaming anything. File the CSS Profile for both households if your parents are separated, because an incomplete household picture is the most common reason a need figure is revised downwards on appeal. And keep the rupee-to-dollar conversion consistent across the CSS Profile and the tax documents – a mismatch is what triggers verification.

Mistakes that cost Indian students WashU aid

  • Applying to WashU as a transfer student and expecting aid – international transfer applicants are not eligible at all
  • Missing the round-specific aid deadline and then requesting aid after admission, which WashU rules out in writing
  • Filing only the custodial parent’s CSS Profile when parents are separated or divorced
  • Treating the no-loan promise as a full ride – the student work contribution still applies
  • Ignoring the 16 December scholarship deadline if you want to be considered for WashU’s named scholarships at the same time
