Davidson College Financial Aid for International Students 2027: Full Need Met, No Loans

Davidson College in North Carolina is one of the few US liberal arts colleges that admits students without looking at whether the family can pay and then fills the gap with grants and campus work instead of loans. Its own financial aid office describes Davidson as one of only two dozen schools in the United States that admit students independent of their family’s ability to pay, cover the bills beyond the calculated family contribution and do so without loans in the aid package.

Davidson College financial aid for international students 2027 - 100% of calculated need met with grants and campus work, no loans

For an Indian applicant the fine print matters. Davidson says it is aware of financial circumstances while reading international applications, and it commits to meeting 100% of the calculated need of every admitted international student except recruited athletes, who are funded from dedicated athletic money. Aid for internationals is described as limited and competitive, and it can only be requested with the admission application. The next deadline is 15 November 2026 for Early Decision I, and the Regular Decision cut-off is 11 January 2027.

What Davidson promises international students

  • 100% of calculated financial need met for admitted international students, through grants and student employment.
  • No loans in the aid package – Davidson states that its need-based packages are built from grants and student employment, not borrowed money.
  • About 51% of Davidson students receive need-based aid and 70% receive aid from some source.
  • All Davidson scholarships are open to international first-year applicants, with international transfer applicants excluded.
  • Every international student who applies for aid is considered for the Alvarez Scholars Program automatically – there is no separate form.

One headline on Davidson’s site needs careful reading: from fall 2027, students from families with income of US$175,000 or less will attend Davidson tuition-free. That promise is written for U.S. students. International applicants are funded from the separate, limited international aid budget described on the international aid page, which is need-based and competitive.

Eligibility rules for international applicants

  • You must request aid when you apply for admission. Davidson does not accept aid applications from international students after admission, and it will not consider one later during enrolment.
  • Recruited athletes are handled separately through dedicated athletic funding rather than this need-based budget.
  • You must file the Financial Verification Form – Davidson requires it from every international applicant, even if you are not asking for financial aid.
  • If your family’s yearly contribution will be under US$5,000, you get an alternative form inside your Davidson admission portal. Above US$5,000 you must submit the CSS Profile.
  • Any outside scholarship you win has to be reported through Davidson’s Outside Resource Notification Form, and it can adjust your award.

Documents you need

  1. Financial Verification Form – mandatory for all international applicants, submitted before the CSS Profile.
  2. CSS Profile (US$25) if the family contribution is above US$5,000 a year. Davidson does not give CSS Profile fee waivers. Below that threshold, the alternative form in the portal replaces it.
  3. Signed student and parent federal income tax returns with all forms, schedules and W-2s, uploaded to the College Board’s IDOC service as part of the aid application.
  4. The admission application itself, with the academic records and English proficiency evidence listed on Davidson’s international applicants page.

How to apply, step by step

  1. Pick your round: Early Decision I (15 November 2026), Early Decision II (4 January 2027) or Regular Decision (11 January 2027). The admission and aid deadlines in each round are the same date.
  2. Submit the admission application before that date.
  3. Complete the Financial Verification Form in your applicant portal, then the CSS Profile or the portal’s alternative form if your family contribution is below US$5,000.
  4. Send the signed tax returns through IDOC.
  5. Watch the portal – Davidson releases the financial aid offer at the same time as the admission decision.

Cost of attendance for 2026-27

Davidson publishes separate cost of attendance tables for domestic and international students. The first-year international figures for 2026-2027 are below; aid is calculated against these costs.

TuitionUS$73,090
Required feesUS$650
Orientation feeUS$250
HousingUS$9,220
FoodUS$9,560
Total billed costsUS$92,770
Books, supplies and equipmentUS$825
Transportation (international estimate)US$1,000
Personal expensesUS$1,400
Total estimated cost of attendanceUS$95,995
Student health insuranceUS$2,800

The billed figure is what appears on the college bill; the non-billed items are estimated allowances used to build the aid budget. Health insurance is charged on top unless the student’s own policy meets the college’s requirements.

Loans, work and outside scholarships

Because Davidson builds need-based packages from grants and student employment, the student contribution comes from campus work and summer earnings rather than from a loan. Families that want to spread the remaining cost can still take a loan, and Davidson publishes its loan options and a student lending code of conduct on its financial aid site. Outside scholarships are welcome, but each one has to be reported so the aid office can adjust the package.

Frequently asked questions

Does Davidson meet 100% of demonstrated need for international students?

Yes, with one exception. Davidson states that it is committed to meeting 100% of the calculated need of international students it admits, except recruited athletes, who are eligible for dedicated athletic funding. The college also says aid for international students is limited and competitive.

What is the last date to apply for financial aid at Davidson?

The aid deadline is the same as the admission deadline in each round: 15 November 2026 for Early Decision I, 4 January 2027 for Early Decision II and 11 January 2027 for Regular Decision. International aid applications are not accepted after admission.

Is the tuition-free promise for US$175,000 family income open to international students?

No. Davidson’s tuition-free pledge from fall 2027 is written for U.S. students from families with income of US$175,000 or less. International applicants apply for the separate need-based international aid budget instead.

Do I need the CSS Profile or can I use another form?

It depends on your family contribution. If it will be less than US$5,000 a year, Davidson gives you an alternative form inside the admission portal. If it will be more than US$5,000, the CSS Profile is required. Davidson does not offer CSS Profile fee waivers.

What is the Financial Verification Form?

It is a form every international applicant must submit, even students who are not applying for financial aid. It is completed in the applicant portal before the CSS Profile.

Are international students eligible for Davidson scholarships?

Yes. Davidson says international applicants, except international transfer applicants, are eligible for all of its scholarships, and every international student who applies for aid is automatically considered for the Alvarez Scholars Program.

What does one year at Davidson cost before aid?

For a first-year international student in 2026-2027 the billed costs are US$92,770 (tuition US$73,090, required fees US$650, orientation US$250, housing US$9,220 and food US$9,560), and the estimated total cost of attendance including books, travel and personal expenses is US$95,995, before the US$2,800 health insurance charge.
