Macalester College in Saint Paul, Minnesota is one of a small group of US liberal arts colleges that promises to meet 100% of the need it calculates for every admitted student and still runs a large merit scholarship programme on top of that. For an Indian student the two questions that decide everything are how much need-based aid is available to international applicants and which date the financial aid forms have to reach the college.

The answer to the second question is the one to write down first: for the 2027 entry cycle the Regular Decision application deadline is 15 January 2027 and the financial aid priority date for that round is 22 January 2027. If you apply Early Decision I or Early Action the application date is 1 November 2026 and the aid forms are due 9 November 2026. Macalester states on its own international aid page that awards are need-based and that the competition for these funds is extremely keen, so the forms are not a formality.

What Macalester offers international students
- 100% of demonstrated need met for every admitted student, with grants and campus work rather than a loan-heavy package.
- 59% of students receive need-based grants from Macalester, and the average need-based financial aid package is US$67,609.
- Merit scholarships up to US$40,000 that every applicant is considered for automatically.
- A dedicated financial aid fund for international students, described by the college as significant but very competitive.
One restriction is worth stating plainly because it is easy to misread: the Macalester Promise, a full-tuition scholarship for students with a family income of US$100,000 or less, is written for admitted U.S. students. International applicants are funded through the need-based international aid budget and the merit scholarships instead.
Merit scholarships: up to US$40,000 with no separate application
Macalester’s merit programme is unusually generous for a college that also meets full need. The college’s own merit page says four out of five Macalester students receive a merit-based scholarship, many of them alongside need-based aid, and that students can receive up to US$40,000 in merit scholarships.
- Every applicant for admission is considered for merit awards automatically – there is no extra scholarship form.
- You do not need to apply for need-based aid to be considered for merit: no FAFSA or CSS Profile is required for a merit award.
- All merit scholarships run for eight semesters and there is no minimum GPA for renewal.
- Early Decision applicants get the same merit consideration as Regular Decision applicants.
- Awards are made at the point of admission only – Macalester does not hand out additional merit money later in the degree.
- National Merit Finalists who name Macalester as their first-choice college are considered for the college’s National Merit Scholarships.
Eligibility for international applicants
- You must be an international applicant who needs financial assistance and you must ask for it in your first year – Macalester cannot consider aid applications from international students after they have begun studying at the college.
- Both required aid documents must be submitted by the priority date for your round, or the application is not considered for admission at all.
- If you are not applying for need-based aid you must still file the Financial Obligations Agreement in the applicant portal, confirming that you understand the financial commitment.
- Aid is need-based, not merit-based, for this fund – the college warns that the competition is extremely keen.
Documents you need to submit
- CSS Profile from the College Board, or the 2027-2028 International Student Application for Financial Assistance (ISAFA) if the CSS Profile fee is a burden. Macalester does not issue CSS Profile fee waivers to international applicants.
- Macalester Financial Declaration Form, available on the Applicant Checklist inside your applicant portal.
- Your admission application itself (the Common App or the college’s own application) with the academic documents and English proficiency evidence the international admissions office asks for.
- If you are not requesting aid: the Financial Obligations Agreement form instead of the two aid forms.
How to apply, step by step
- Decide which round you are using – Early Decision I, Early Action, Early Decision II or Regular Decision – and note both dates for that round: the application deadline and the financial aid priority date.
- Submit the admission application by the round’s deadline.
- Submit the CSS Profile or the 2027-2028 ISAFA, plus the Financial Declaration Form, by the aid priority date for that round.
- Watch the applicant portal for the Applicant Checklist; any missing document shows up there.
- Merit consideration is automatic – nothing extra to file. Need-based results arrive shortly after the admission decision.

Cost of attendance for 2026-27
Macalester bundles tuition, housing, meals and the activity fee into one comprehensive fee. The college’s published 2026-2027 figures are below; any need-based aid and merit scholarship is subtracted from this total.
| Tuition and required course materials | US$74,394 |
| Residence hall | US$9,268 |
| Meal plan | US$8,162 |
| Activity fee | US$330 |
| Comprehensive fee | US$92,154 |
| Student health insurance (waivable) | US$3,329 |
Tuition at Macalester includes the rental of textbooks and other required course materials, so the book bill is smaller than at most US colleges. Health insurance is charged unless the student holds an alternative policy that meets the college’s requirements.
Campus work and loans for international students
Every international student who qualifies for aid is offered part-time campus work as part of the package: typically about 9 hours a week, earning roughly US$3,600 after taxes over the first year. That money is meant for out-of-pocket costs rather than the billed charges, and it cannot be swapped for extra scholarship if the student chooses not to work. Macalester also runs its own Macalester College International Student Loan for families that want to spread part of the cost.
Outside scholarships are welcome and the college encourages students to pursue them, but any award has to be reported to the financial aid office because it counts towards the aid package.
