Eligibility criteria for IIT Indore PhD admission

The engineering departments follow this Minimum Educational Qualification (MEQ) and Qualifying Examination (QE) structure, published on the institute’s PhD admissions page.

  1. A master’s degree (M.Tech./M.E./M.S.) in the relevant department of engineering or technology, with first division as defined in the advertisement, and a valid GATE qualification.
  2. Or a four-year bachelor’s degree (B.Tech./B.S.) or a five-year integrated degree in the relevant department of engineering with first division, and a valid GATE qualification or UGC-JRF or UGC (PhD) qualification.
  3. Or a master’s degree in the relevant department of science with first division, and a valid GATE qualification, or a UGC/CSIR-JRF qualification, or an equivalent fellowship, or a valid CSIR-NET/UGC-NET Category-3 for admission with Teaching Assistantship.
  4. Or a master’s degree in the relevant department of science with first division and UGC-NET (Lectureship), and a valid GATE qualification.

Two exemptions matter. B.Tech. and M.Sc. graduates of IITs with a CPI of 8.50 or above out of 10 can be admitted directly without GATE, JEST or UGC-CSIR (NET), but only in their own discipline – engineering graduates are considered only for engineering departments and science graduates only for science departments. GATE is also not compulsory for the DF, IS, CT and SW categories. A valid JEST score is accepted in addition to GATE for the Department of Astronomy, Astrophysics and Space Engineering, and for Physics.

Each department adds its own subject requirement. In Computer Science and Engineering, for example, the GATE paper must be Computer Science and Information Technology (CS) or Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (DA), or the candidate must hold UGC-NET-LS. Read your department’s own advertisement before paying the fee.

  • Two letters of recommendation are required. In Computer Science and Engineering, the two recommendations must reach the department by 25 October 2026.
  • Mere fulfilment of the minimum eligibility does not guarantee admission; the selection committee decides after the written test and interview.
