Middlebury College in Vermont has announced the biggest change to its undergraduate pricing in years: from the class entering in fall 2027, the college will cover the full cost of tuition for admitted students whose family income is below US$175,000 a year and whose assets sit in a typical range for that income. Its own FAQ confirms that international students are eligible for the programme.

For Indian families the number is easy to translate: US$175,000 is roughly Rs 1.5 crore a year at current rates. If your family income is below that line and your assets are not unusually large, Middlebury tuition is covered by grant aid that you never repay. Room, meals, and travel are not part of the tuition-free promise, and the college is need-aware for international applicants, so read the rest of this page before you plan.

What the tuition-free programme covers, and what it does not
Middlebury is precise about this: the programme covers tuition charges only. Housing, meals, the student activity fee, transportation, and personal expenses stay in the cost of attendance and are handled through Middlebury’s normal need-based aid process. Students who qualify for tuition-free attendance will often also receive grant help for those costs, depending on demonstrated need.
One more detail that surprises families: tuition still appears on the student bill. Middlebury simply applies grant and scholarship credit against it, so the tuition balance ends at zero. The programme has no separate application form. If you apply for financial aid and submit every required document on time, you are considered automatically.
Are international students eligible for Middlebury’s tuition-free programme?
Yes. The programme FAQ asks the question directly and answers: Middlebury remains committed to making a Middlebury education affordable for talented students from around the world, and international applicants who apply for financial aid continue to be considered for need-based aid. Eligibility for the tuition-free benefit is decided under Middlebury’s published financial aid policies.
The programme is being introduced class by class. It starts with the Class of 2031, the first-year group entering in fall 2027, and Middlebury says all undergraduates will have access as the scheme rolls out over four years. Students already enrolled keep their existing need-based awards, which already meet 100% of calculated need.
The honest catch: Middlebury is need-aware for international applicants
Middlebury is need-blind for first-year domestic applicants: the college states plainly that your ability to pay is not a factor in the admission decision for them. For international students the wording is different: Middlebury says international students may have their financial need considered when applying for admission, and the international requirements page states that the college is need aware in its admission of international students.
Practically that means an Indian applicant who needs a large aid package is read in a tougher pool than a full-pay applicant. It also means the aid decision and the admission decision have to be planned together: if you do not apply for aid when you apply for admission, Middlebury states you will not be eligible for financial assistance in later years.
What Middlebury costs in 2026-27
These are the published 2026-2027 figures, before any aid. They matter because they show what the tuition-free promise removes from your bill and what stays.
- Tuition: US$72,924 for the year (US$36,462 per semester)
- On-campus housing and meal plan: US$20,920 (US$10,460 per semester)
- Student activity fee: US$542 (US$271 per semester)
- Direct charges before aid: US$94,386 for tuition, housing, meals, and the activity fee
- Books, course materials, travel, and personal expenses are estimated separately and are not billed directly by the college
A tuition-free student therefore still faces roughly US$21,500 a year in housing, meals, and the activity fee, plus travel and personal costs. That gap is what the need-based aid package is for, and Middlebury says higher-need students can also get health insurance and a laptop covered.
How Middlebury meets 100% of calculated need
Middlebury is one of a small group of US undergraduate colleges that meet 100% of demonstrated financial need for all four years. Its aid is entirely need-based, calculated from the CSS Profile plus supporting tax and income documents, with the FAFSA applying only to US citizens and eligible non-citizens.
The package is built from Middlebury Grant funds, a work-study opportunity worth about US$2,900, and a limited student loan. For incoming students the loan is between US$1,000 and US$3,500 a year, depending on family income, and it can be declined without losing grant money. Middlebury also expects a minimum student contribution of US$2,400 a year regardless of income.
The published scale of the programme: about US$80 million in institutional aid a year, roughly 50% of students receiving aid, an average grant of about US$66,000, and average federal loan debt at graduation of US$14,470 for Middlebury’s most recent graduating class. Books and course materials are funded by the college for students on need-based aid.

Documents and English requirements for Indian applicants
Middlebury accepts the Common App, the Coalition Application, or QuestBridge. It asks for the application essay from the prompts, at least two teacher recommendations, and a school report with counselor recommendation and transcript. There is no supplemental essay, and SAT or ACT scores are optional.
- English proficiency: TOEFL iBT 5.5 on the new scoring scale (105 on the older scale, for tests taken before 21 January 2026), Duolingo English Test 130, IELTS 7.0, or Cambridge English C1 Advanced
- Exemption: no score is needed if English is your native language or your high school classes were taught entirely in English for the last three or four years
- Financial aid: CSS Profile plus parent and student tax and income documents; Middlebury counts both parents’ income, including in divorce or separation cases
- Interview: not required; you can request an optional alumni interview after applying, or use InitialView or Vericant (both charge a fee)
The application file needs senior grades as well: Early Decision II applicants send midyear grades by 15 January, and Regular Decision applicants by 15 February. Middlebury states that no admission decision is made without senior grades.
How to apply for the tuition-free programme: step by step

- Apply for admission through the Common App, Coalition App, or QuestBridge by 4 January 2027 for Early Decision II or Regular Decision.
- Start the CSS Profile early and keep your latest tax returns, salary slips, and bank statements ready; Middlebury reviews both taxable and untaxed income.
- Submit the financial aid file by the round’s deadline: 4 January 2027 for Early Decision II, or 1 February 2027 for Regular Decision.
- Send English proficiency scores only if your school did not teach you in English for the last three or four years.
