What are the Waterloo Mathematics International Awards for India?

The Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Waterloo sets aside awards specifically for students with Indian citizenship who enrol in a mathematics programme on a student visa. Waterloo explains that it accepts a number of applicants from India each year and that the India awards sit alongside its National and Global scholarship families.

All of these awards are automatic: you do not fill a scholarship form. When you apply for admission to a Faculty of Mathematics programme, you are considered for the India, Global and National scholarships together, and the decision is based on your admission average, your Admission Information Form (AIF), the country of your last school and your citizenship.

Value of each Faculty of Mathematics award

  • Mathematics International Elite Awards: India – up to 5 available, $40,000 each, paid in two equal payments in the first year.
  • Mathematics International Excellence Awards: India – up to 10 available, $20,000 each, paid in two equal payments in the first year.
  • Mathematics Global Scholarships – open to international students, up to 10 available, worth $12,000 to $40,000 and spread equally over eight academic terms; you must keep a minimum 80% average and take five courses each academic term to keep receiving payments after first year.
  • Faculty of Mathematics entrance scholarships can be combined with University of Waterloo scholarships, so an India award does not stop you from holding another Waterloo award.

Eligibility: who can apply

  • You must be an international student with Indian citizenship – the India awards are restricted to Indian citizens.
  • You must be studying on a student visa and admitted to a Faculty of Mathematics programme at the University of Waterloo.
  • You must be entering the first year of an undergraduate degree – the India awards are entrance awards paid in the first year.
  • Your programme must not be Software Engineering or Computing and Financial Management, which are excluded from the India, Global and National awards.
  • For the Mathematics Global Scholarships, which are spread over eight terms, you must keep a minimum 80% average and take five courses each academic term to keep receiving payments after first year.

The $10,000 International Student Entrance Scholarship

Over and above the Faculty of Mathematics awards, the University of Waterloo gives every international fee-paying student admitted to full-time, first-year degree studies a $10,000 International Student Entrance Scholarship. There is no application – eligible students see it on the Awards and financial aid tab of the Waterloo applicant portal from April.

  • The value is $10,000, paid in two instalments – the first $5,000 in late July to help with first-term tuition and the second $5,000 in late November for second-term tuition.
  • The scholarship is available in the first year only and cannot be spread over multiple years.
  • You need to be enrolled full-time (three or more courses) in both your first and second terms and continue to be an international fee-paying student.
  • It does not replace or reduce other Waterloo entrance scholarships, so you can hold it along with a Mathematics India award.
  • It is not available to Medical Sciences (Waterloo) and Doctor of Medicine (St. George’s University) students, Bachelor of Social Work, Doctor of Optometry and Doctor of Pharmacy students, transfer students admitted with transfer credits, students who deferred an offer from a previous year, or students in 2+2 and similar programmes.

  3. No scholarship form is needed. You are automatically considered for the India, Global and National scholarships as an eligible applicant.
  4. Watch the Waterloo applicant portal. Awards such as the International Student Entrance Scholarship appear under the Awards and financial aid tab, from April for the fall intake.
