What is the TMU International Student Leadership Award?

TMU runs two International Student Leadership Awards each year, one for the fall intake and one for the winter intake. The award is designed for international students who do well academically, volunteer, join clubs and show leadership qualities – it is not purely a merit discount, and the personal statement carries real weight.

The Fall version is for international students enrolling in a Canadian post-secondary institution for the first time. In the fall 2027 round TMU is offering the award to up to 53 recipients, each receiving CAD $10,000. It is an entrance-only, non-renewable award, so it is paid once and is not continued in later years.

TMU says it designates over CAD $7 million to entrance scholarship support for its first-year class, and the ISLA is the main award for international entrants.

Scholarship value and what it covers

  • Each ISLA – Fall 2027 award is worth CAD $10,000.
  • Up to 53 recipients are selected in the fall 2027 round.
  • The award is entrance-only: it applies to your first year and cannot be renewed.
  • It is for students paying international tuition fees at TMU.
  • The separate ISLA – Winter award has the same CAD $10,000 value with up to 20 recipients; its 2027 applications closed on 14 September 2026, so the next window for a January start arrives in 2027.

Eligibility: who can apply

To be eligible for the ISLA – Fall, TMU requires that you:

  • Are an international student enrolling in a Canadian post-secondary institution for the first time.
  • Are starting your first year of a full-time four-year undergraduate degree (or a five-year co-op degree) at TMU.
  • Are required to pay international tuition fees.
  • Have a final admission average of at least 86%, an A, or an equivalent.
  • Submit a personal statement with your application.
  • If you took a gap year, it must be no longer than one academic year.

Note that you can apply for fall 2027 awards before receiving an offer of admission from TMU – the AwardSpring portal opens once you have your TMU Student Number and have activated your online identity.

How to apply for the TMU ISLA

  1. Apply to TMU for a full-time four-year undergraduate degree (or a five-year co-op programme) and make sure you will pay international tuition fees.
  2. Wait for your TMU Student Number and activate your online identity – that is what unlocks the scholarship portal.

  4. Submit the ISLA application with your personal statement before 16 February 2027. TMU states plainly that applications will not be accepted past the deadline for any reason, including technical problems.
