Vassar College Financial Aid for International Students 2027-28

Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York, meets 100% of the demonstrated financial need of every admitted student for all four years, and that promise covers international students who ask for aid when they apply. Over half of Vassar students receive aid and the average Vassar scholarship award is US$63,033, so this is a full-need school rather than a token-discount one.

Vassar College Financial Aid

The honesty section comes next, because Vassar’s own pages say two different things. Its tuition page says the college is need-blind. Its international admission page says the college is need-aware when reviewing applications from international students. The second statement is the one that applies to an Indian applicant. Here is what that means for the 2027-28 cycle, with the exact deadlines and documents.

The aid promise in Vassar’s own words

Vassar states that it meets 100% of the full demonstrated need of all admitted students for all four years, and that it meets 100% of the demonstrated financial need of all admitted students who apply for aid at the time of application. Over half of Vassar students receive financial aid and the average Vassar scholarship award is US$63,033.

The award is calculated from the CSS Profile and, for American families, the FAFSA. Vassar’s aid can come as scholarships, grants, loans and on-campus jobs, so the grant and scholarship portion is what actually reduces the bill.

Need-aware admission: the caveat behind the need-blind line

Vassar is need-blind for US citizens and permanent residents, and need-aware for international first-year and transfer applicants. In the college’s own words on the international page: Vassar meets the full demonstrated need of all admitted students who apply for financial aid at the time of their admission application, and the college is need aware when reviewing applications from international students.

Two rules decide whether you can ever receive money. Students who are neither US citizens nor permanent residents must apply for aid at the same time as they apply for admission, and students admitted without financial aid in the first year are not eligible for Vassar funding in later years. There is also no aid at all for international transfer applicants.

Cost of attendance for 2026-27

These are the figures Vassar publishes for the current academic year. They are the base that the 2027-28 award will be calculated against, with the usual annual increase:

TuitionUS$76,140
Housing and diningUS$19,800
FeesUS$1,020
Books, supplies, personal expenses and travel (budget)about US$2,250

Health insurance is compulsory for every student. Vassar offers a college plan and allows a waiver only if you can show equivalent cover, so an Indian family with an existing international policy should check the waiver conditions before paying for the college plan.

Deadlines: admission and the aid file

Vassar keeps separate calendars for admission and for financial aid, and the two do not line up. Both tables come from the college’s own pages for the cycle now open:

Admission – Early Decision I15 November 2026
Admission – Early Decision II1 January 2027
Admission – Regular Decision1 January 2027
Aid file – Early Decision I15 November 2026
Aid file – Early Decision II1 January 2027
Aid file – Regular Decision1 February 2027
Aid file – fall transfer15 March 2027
Aid file – returning students1 May 2027

The single most useful line for an Indian applicant is the Regular Decision pair: apply for admission by 1 January 2027 and the aid file is not due until 1 February 2027. That month is the window to finish the CSS Profile, get the IDOC documents in and sort out translations.

Documents and codes an Indian applicant needs

  • The CSS Profile, submitted to Vassar’s code 2956. It opens after 1 October and applies to all students, domestic and international. Where the student’s parents are separated or divorced, each parent completes a separate CSS Profile.
  • IDOC, the College Board’s document service, opens in late October or early November and only after the CSS Profile is complete. Write your name and IDOC ID on every document you upload.
  • The FAFSA only if you are a US citizen or permanent resident – Vassar’s FAFSA code is 002895 and the form opens in December. It is not the form for an Indian applicant.
  • Certified English translations of transcripts and income documents, sent with the originals.
  • Proof of English proficiency: Duolingo, IELTS Academic or TOEFL iBT. Vassar does not accept IELTS General Training or TOEFL Essentials.

Vassar is unusually strict about alternatives: it does not offer CSS Profile waiver codes and does not accept the International Student Financial Aid Application (ISFAA) in place of the CSS Profile. Budget for the Profile fee and file early rather than looking for a substitute form at the last minute. Aid questions go to [email protected].

Applying as an international first-year student

Vassar’s international community draws from more than 50 countries. The academic file is a complete secondary school transcript plus the results of any national or board examinations – CBSE and ISC results belong in the file, and terminal exam results are required for enrolment. Documents not in English need a certified translation, which a school official can do if an agency translation is a financial hardship.

English proficiency is required if English was not the language of instruction for the last three years. Vassar accepts the Duolingo English Test, IELTS Academic, and TOEFL iBT including the Paper Edition and the Home Edition. An InitialView or Vericant interview can be added, and the college recommends an interview for applicants who submit TOEFL or IELTS scores.

How to apply for aid, step by step

  1. Choose the round. Early Decision I is binding and closes 15 November 2026; Early Decision II and Regular Decision both close 1 January 2027.
  2. Tick the financial aid request inside the admission application. Skipping it removes you from Vassar aid for all four years.
  3. Complete the CSS Profile with code 2956 and finish IDOC as soon as the service invites you.
  4. Send translated parent income and tax documents through IDOC well before the aid deadline.
  5. File by 15 November 2026 for ED I, 1 January 2027 for ED II, or 1 February 2027 for Regular Decision.
