Barnard College Financial Aid for International Students 2027-28

Barnard College is a women’s college in New York City, affiliated with Columbia University, and it funds international undergraduates with need-based aid rather than only token discounts. The college meets 100% of demonstrated need and 16% of its students come from outside the United States, drawn from 60 countries. For an Indian woman looking at a US degree, that combination is worth a serious look.

Barnard College Financial Aid

There are two rules to understand before you start. Barnard is need-blind for US citizens and permanent residents, but need-aware for non-US citizens, because the money set aside for international first-years is limited. And the aid request must travel with the admission application – a student who does not ask for aid at that point cannot get Barnard money later. Here is the full picture for the 2027-28 cycle, with the exact deadlines.

What Barnard promises, and what it does not

Barnard awards aid only on demonstrated need. In the college’s own words, all financial aid at Barnard is awarded solely on demonstrated need, and there are no merit awards at all. The award is built from grants, loans and campus job opportunities, and the college states that it meets 100% of a family’s demonstrated need through that combination.

That wording matters: Barnard is not a no-loan school, unlike some of its peers. An aid package can include a loan component, so read the offer letter line by line and compare the grant portion across colleges rather than the headline total.

The size of an average package, from the aid statistics Barnard publishes on its cost and aid page:

Students receiving need-based aid35% of all Barnard students
Average total need-based grantUS$68,562
Average financial indebtedness of recent graduatesUS$13,247

The need-aware rule Indian applicants must plan around

Barnard’s admission policy splits by citizenship. Financial need is not considered when the college reviews a first-year application from a US citizen or permanent resident. For international first-year applicants the college says it has limited funding, so it is need-aware and does consider financial need when reviewing those applications.

The college also states that it can award only a small number of need-based scholarships for international students in each first-year entering class. In practice that means the aid pool is small and competitive, and that the admission decision and the aid decision are linked for an Indian applicant in a way they are not for an American one.

Two hard rules follow from that. First, international students must apply for financial aid at the time of admission to be eligible for assistance in later years – so tick the aid box on the application even if the numbers look frightening. Second, Barnard cannot assist international transfer students at all, so if you want Barnard money, the first-year route is the only route.

Deadlines for the 2027-28 cycle

Barnard runs one Early Decision round and one Regular Decision round. These are the dates printed on the college’s own pages for the cycle now open:

Admission – Early Decision1 November 2026, notification mid-December
Admission – Regular Decision1 January 2027, notification late March
Aid file – Early Decision1 November 2026
Aid file – Regular Decision15 January 2027
ED supporting documents (school report, teacher recommendations, test scores)20 November 2026
ED first-quarter grades25 November 2026
RD school report and teacher recommendations15 January 2027
RD mid-year grades28 February 2027

Note the shape of the Regular Decision window: the admission application closes on 1 January but the aid file stays open until 15 January, which gives an Indian family two extra weeks to finish the financial paperwork. Early Decision candidates do not get that cushion – the admission application and the aid file are both due on the same day.

Documents an Indian applicant sends

  • The Common Application, with Barnard’s two short-answer questions. Barnard also accepts QuestBridge.
  • Official high school transcript plus the results of any external national or board examinations – CBSE and other board marksheets count here. Certificates are not required and should not be sent.
  • Certified English translations of any document not issued in English, sent together with the original.
  • Secondary School Report and high school profile from your counsellor, plus two teacher recommendations from core academic subjects and the counsellor letter.
  • SAT or ACT scores only if you want them considered – Barnard is test-optional for applicants through the 2027 cycles and will superscore what you self-report.
  • An English proficiency score unless you qualify for a waiver. Barnard says the most competitive candidates score 7.5 or higher on IELTS, 105 or higher on TOEFL, or 135 or higher on Duolingo.
  • A US$75 application fee, or a fee waiver request filed through the application platform.

How to apply for aid, step by step

  1. Pick the round. Early Decision closed on 1 November 2026 and is binding; Regular Decision closes 1 January 2027.
  2. Create the CSS Profile early – the aid file on Barnard’s 2027-28 checklist is the FAFSA, the CSS Profile and supporting documents. The FAFSA line applies to US citizens and permanent residents, so an Indian applicant’s file is built around the CSS Profile plus whatever documents the aid office asks for. Confirm the exact list with the aid office before you file.
  3. Upload the documents to the Barnard applicant portal, not to IDOC – Barnard does not participate in the College Board’s Institutional Documentation Service.
  4. Send translated, signed parent income and tax documents, and ask the aid office at [email protected] which form to use if your family does not file a tax return.
  5. Finish by 15 January 2027 for Regular Decision. Late aid files are not considered for the first-year international pool.

English tests, interviews and the small print

Barnard accepts TOEFL, IELTS and the Duolingo English Test, and the requirement can be waived if English is one of your first languages, if your school taught in English for your whole secondary career, or if you are in the IB Diploma or A Level curriculum taught in English. Scores are valid for two years, and Barnard does not use TOEFL MyBest scores or superscore any English test.

One detail to watch if you take TOEFL in 2026: for exams taken on or after 20 January 2026 the college expects a score of at least 5.5 on the new reporting scale, alongside the 105 guidance for older scores. Barnard also accepts the TOEFL iBT Home Edition and the IELTS Indicator, but not TOEFL Essentials.

Interviews are optional. International applicants can buy an InitialView or Vericant video interview and have it sent with the application; Barnard does not waive those fees. Questions about the international process go to [email protected].

Frequently asked questions

Does Barnard College give financial aid to international students?

15 January 2027 for Regular Decision, and 1 November 2026 for Early Decision. The Regular Decision admission application itself is due 1 January 2027.
