What the scholarship covers
The award is a tuition fee credit of up to 25% of one year’s tuition fees. In the official regulations the value is written as ‘a tuition fees credit of up to 25% of the recipients tuition fees for the first two semesters of their masters degree’. In plain words, if your master’s is a two-semester, one-year programme, the scholarship can cut up to a quarter of that year’s tuition.
It is not a stipend, so it does not cover living costs, flights, insurance or visa fees. The money must be used for costs directly related to your study at the University. The scholarship runs for a term of one year of full-time equivalent enrolment, and it commences in the next available semester after your confirmed offer – either Semester One or Semester Two.
Who is eligible for the India High Achievers Scholarship
The regulations set out four conditions. An applicant must:
- be an international student at the University of Auckland;
- hold a passport issued by the Government of India;
- have received a conditional or unconditional offer of admission to an eligible master’s programme at the University; and
- have an Admissions GPE of at least 7.0 (the grade point equivalent Auckland calculates from your previous study).
You are not eligible if you:
- have already started studying at the University of Auckland;
- have undertaken any tertiary-level study in New Zealand before, other than a student exchange programme;
- are enrolling as a distance-education student, including University of Auckland Online; or
- are enrolling in the Graduate School of Management in any programme other than the Master of Applied Finance, Master of Business Analytics or Master of Professional Accounting.
How the award is decided – there is no open application
This is the part most students get wrong. There is no application form you can send at any time. The selection process works like this:
- You apply for admission to an eligible master’s programme at the University of Auckland, which is a separate process with its own deadlines.
- Auckland reviews eligible applicants and, on 21 October 2026, issues invitations to complete a supplementary application form on its online portal.
- Invited students submit that supplementary form by 4 November 2026.
- A selection committee – the Director International and two faculty Associate Deans (International) – recommends recipients, and the Vice-Chancellor grants the scholarship.
The stated selection criteria are academic merit as assessed by the Admissions GPE and the quality of the personal statement. A third factor that may also inform selection is how your intended programme aligns with the strategic objectives of the University.

Because the invitation list is generated from the admission pool, the practical deadline that matters earlier is your master’s admission application deadline – you must already be holding an offer before 21 October 2026 to be in the running.
Conditions you must keep after winning
- You must accept the scholarship offer by the date stated in the notification, or the offer is forfeited.
- You must complete at least two consecutive semesters of study at the University.
- If you do not complete those two consecutive semesters, you will normally be required to pay back the full value of the scholarship.
- You must stay enrolled full-time in the applicable programme for the term of the scholarship.
- You cannot hold this scholarship at the same time as any other tuition-fee-paying scholarship funded by the University’s International Office. Other awards are possible only with the Director’s approval.
How to get ready before the 21 October invitation
Since the scholarship comes to you through the admission system, the work happens earlier:
- Shortlist an eligible master’s programme at the University of Auckland (one year or more) and check its own application deadline.
- Prepare your transcripts and documents, and complete your admission application so that you have a conditional or unconditional offer in hand before mid-October.
- Draft a strong personal statement now – it is one of the two stated selection criteria, so treat it like the main essay of your application.
- When the invitation arrives on 21 October 2026, complete the supplementary form and submit it before 4 November 2026.
