Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota meets 100% of the demonstrated financial need of every student it admits, and from the 2027-28 academic year it will do that without putting a single loan in the aid package. For an Indian family comparing a US liberal arts college with a big state university, that combination is the whole story: the college works out what your family can pay, then covers the rest with grants and a campus job instead of debt.

The catch is on the international side, and Carleton states it plainly: funding for international students is limited, so the college is need-aware when it reads an application from outside the United States, and it will not consider a new or revised aid application once you have an offer of admission. Apply for aid at the same time as admission, or not at all.

Carleton goes no-loan for all students from 2027-28
Carleton has announced that beginning in the 2027-28 academic year it will replace all federal and institutional loans in need-based aid packages with grants and scholarships. Its aid page now says the quiet part out loud: the college meets 100% of demonstrated need, without loans, for every student. A student who joins in fall 2027 is therefore the first intake to graduate without the loan component that older aid letters carried.
The published numbers behind that promise, from the college’s own debt-free page:
- 100% of demonstrated need met for every student, without loans.
- US$0 assumed in private loans or outside scholarships.
- US$21,763 – average amount a family on financial aid actually paid, according to the college’s latest published aid year.
- US$71,866 – average need-based aid package in that same published year.
- US$94,980 – the 2026-27 comprehensive fee, covering tuition, housing, food and the student activity fee.
Nearly four out of five Carleton students hold a campus job, and the aid offer assumes that work rather than a loan: about US$3,200 for a first-year student (roughly 8 hours a week) and up to US$4,000 for returning students (about 10 hours a week).
Cost of attendance at Carleton for 2026-27
These are the college’s published figures for the current academic year. Tuition, housing and food rise slightly each year, so treat the 2027-28 numbers as a close reflection of these.
| Tuition | US$75,186 |
| Student activity fee | US$480 |
| Housing | US$10,194 |
| Food | US$9,120 |
| Comprehensive fee (direct cost) | US$94,980 |
| Books and personal costs (estimated) | US$2,040 |
| Travel (average) | US$850 |
| Total cost of attendance | US$97,870 |
| Student health insurance | US$2,355 (opt in or waive each year) |
The comprehensive fee is the number your aid is measured against. A family with heavy need sees most of that US$94,980 replaced by grant aid; the indirect items (books, travel, health insurance) are the part students usually fund from the campus job and their own savings.
Who is eligible for Carleton international financial aid
- You must be a first-year applicant who is not a US citizen or permanent resident and who needs help with the cost of attendance.
- You must tick the box on the admission application saying you intend to apply for financial aid. There is no separate scholarship form, but the box is the switch – without it you are treated as a full-pay applicant.
- You complete the CSS Profile (Carleton’s school code is 6081, US$25 fee) or the free International Student Application for Financial Assistance. Custodial and noncustodial parents both complete the profile.
- Every international applicant, including students who do not ask for aid, must submit a Certification of Finances with the admission application. The form appears on your applicant status page after you apply.
Two rules make the timing critical. First, the level of aid is fixed for all four years, and you do not reapply every year. Second, because funding for international students is limited, Carleton will not consider a new or revised financial aid application after it has made an offer of admission. An admitted student who did not ask for aid cannot come back in year two and ask for it.
How to apply for Carleton financial aid as an international student
- Submit the admission application (Common Application or Carleton’s own application) and tick the financial aid box inside it. Fall Early Decision closes 15 November 2026.
- Complete the CSS Profile with school code 6081, or the free International Student Application for Financial Assistance if the US$25 fee is a problem. Both parents’ households are covered.
- Upload the prior-prior year’s tax documents or statement of earnings. Profile filers upload through IDOC; students using the free form upload through the applicant portal.
- Send the Certification of Finances from the applicant status page – this is required whether or not you are applying for aid.
- Watch for the aid offer: Carleton sends the financial aid award with the admission letter, so you see the net price before you have to reply.
Carleton important dates for the 2027 intake
| 1 October 2026 | CSS Profile opens for the 2027-28 aid year |
| 15 November 2026 | Fall Early Decision deadline (admission and aid), decision by 15 December |
| 15 January 2027 | Winter Early Decision and Regular Decision deadline (admission and aid) |
| March 2027 | Transfer student aid deadline – 31 March |
| March 2027 | Returning students: 25 March aid deadline |
Carleton’s aid calendar follows the admission calendar rather than sitting a month behind it, which is unusual among US colleges. Missing the aid step at the same deadline means waiting a full year, because the college does not reopen the file after admission.
