Eligibility criteria for JNCASR Ph.D. and M.S.(Engg.) admission

For the Ph.D. programme, the brochure’s Table 1 lays down the degrees accepted by each unit. In general:

  1. An M.Sc. or equivalent, B.E./B.Tech/B.S. (4 year) or equivalent, M.E./M.Tech or equivalent, B.VSc./M.VSc. or MBBS/MD is accepted, as applicable to the individual unit – for example, CPMU and TSU accept M.Sc. in Electronics, Chemical, Mathematical, Physical or Materials Sciences, or an engineering degree in Electrical, Electronics, Metallurgy, Polymer, Engineering Physics, Nano Technology or Chemical Engineering.
  2. Candidates with an M.Sc. or M.E./M.Tech or equivalent need at least 55% marks in aggregate, or an equivalent grade where a grading system is followed.
  3. Candidates applying after a 4-year / 8-semester bachelor’s programme need a minimum of 75% marks in aggregate or an equivalent grade.
  4. There is a relaxation of 5% marks (or its equivalent grade) for candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/PwD and EWS categories.
  5. M.Sc./B.E./B.Tech. graduates from JNCASR, IISERs or IITs with a minimum CGPA of 8.0 out of 10 can apply for the Ph.D. programme without qualifying GATE or any other national entrance examination.

For the M.S.(Engg.) programme, you need a B.E./B.Tech/B.S. (4 year) in an area relevant to the unit offering the programme (CPMU, EMU, NCU or TSU) with a valid GATE score.

National exams accepted and the JRF validity rule

  • The national exams accepted are GATE, GPAT, UGC-JRF, CSIR-NET-JRF, ICMR-JRF, DBT-JRF and INSPIRE-JRF. The brochure also lists UGC-NET for JRF and Joint CSIR-UGC NET for JRF under the NET-JRF head.
  • Your passing certificate or score card must be valid as on 1 January 2027, when the session starts.
  • You must have qualified for the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) to apply through the NET-JRF route – a lectureship-only NET score does not meet this bar.
  • Applicants applying through the INSPIRE route must hold a valid provisional INSPIRE offer issued by DST at the time of the interview, for their application to be considered at level II of selection.
  • For holders of an M.E./M.Tech or equivalent, qualifying in a national exam is desirable rather than compulsory, while for the M.Sc. and 4-year bachelor’s routes a valid GATE score or NET-JRF is what the unit table asks for.

Selection process and how to apply

  • Candidates are shortlisted for an interview on the basis of their performance in the national exam(s) and their academic performance.
  • The interview is held in person; in some units an aptitude test or a preliminary interview may precede the final interview.
  • Selection is subject to a strong academic background, the score/percentile/rank in the national fellowship exam, recommendations from referees and interview performance – merely meeting the eligibility criteria does not entitle you to be shortlisted.
  • Applications are submitted online through the JNCASR admission portal. The application fee is Rs 1,000 and is non-refundable, paid through the Cashfree payment gateway in the portal; payment-gateway charges, where applicable, are borne by the candidate, and there are no gateway charges on UPI payments.
  • Applicants who are in the final semester or year of their qualifying degree but expect to complete all requirements by 1 January 2027 can apply, and must furnish the certificates on or before 31 March 2027.
  • For admission queries the Centre asks candidates to write only to [email protected].

Important dates for JNCASR mid-year admissions 2026-27

  • Website opens for online submission of applications: 16 October 2026
  • Last date for online submission of applications: 31 October 2026, 23:59 hours
  • Commencement of session: 1 January 2027
  • Certificate submission deadline for candidates completing their qualifying degree late: 31 March 2027
  • Interview dates are not fixed in the advertisement – shortlisted candidates are informed by the Centre, so keep the email address given in your application active.

Fellowship for research students at JNCASR

  • The brochure states that all regular Ph.D. students who join JNCASR are eligible for fellowships from CSIR/UGC/ICMR/DBT/DST, depending on their mode of entry.
  • The official documents do not publish a monthly fellowship amount, so the exact figure depends on the funding agency and the fellowship you qualify for – treat any specific monthly number you see elsewhere as unverified.
  • Because the funding comes through the national fellowship route, the JRF validity date of 1 January 2027 matters: an expired award will not carry you into the session.
