Newcastle University Vice-Chancellor’s International Scholarship 2027: £7,000 a Year

The Newcastle University Vice-Chancellor’s International Scholarship (VCIS) 2027 is a partial scholarship of the University of Newcastle in the United Kingdom for international students starting an undergraduate degree in the 2027/28 academic year. The award is worth £7,000 for every academic year of your course, and India is on the list of eligible countries.

The important thing to know is that there is no separate scholarship form. You apply for your degree through UCAS as usual and the university assesses you automatically. But the UCAS Equal Consideration Deadline of 13 January 2027 is the date that decides your eligibility, so an early course application matters.

How much is the Newcastle VCIS award worth?

The award is a partial tuition fee scholarship, not a cash payment. The official award page states the value as £7,000 per academic year, and the regulations add that it is credited to your tuition fee account to reduce the overall cost of your degree.

  • £7,000 per academic year towards tuition fees for the full duration of an undergraduate degree at the Newcastle city centre campus.
  • The scholarship is renewable each year and is subject to your academic progression. As long as you progress normally, it continues for the whole course – a three-year degree is therefore worth about £21,000.
  • Students who pay reduced fees while on a placement year receive the scholarship payments on a pro-rata basis.
  • The university says these are partial awards, awarded to a large number of international students each year – it does not cover the full tuition fee or living costs.

Are Indian students eligible for the Newcastle VCIS?

Yes. The regulations list the eligible countries and regions, and India is on that list. To be treated as domiciled in India you must have predominantly resided there during the last three years – the university counts your permanent country of residence, not a country where you are only living for the purpose of full-time education.

Country list, as published: Algeria, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Egypt, Ghana, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Jordan, Kenya, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Myanmar, Nepal, Nigeria, Norway, Pakistan, Peru, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, UAE, Ukraine, USA, Vietnam, Zimbabwe and all EU member states.

Beyond nationality, you must also:

  • have been offered a place on an eligible undergraduate degree at the university’s Newcastle city centre campus for the 2027/28 academic year;
  • be assessed as international for fee purposes;
  • become a registered full-time student on an award-bearing undergraduate programme in 2027/28;
  • be a self-funded student – fully sponsored students (full tuition covered before any scholarship deduction) do not qualify;
  • select Newcastle as your Firm or Insurance choice on UCAS if you receive an award.

Newcastle VCIS 2027: important dates

  • 13 January 2027 – the UCAS Equal Consideration Deadline by which your course application must be submitted for you to be considered for the scholarship.
  • 31 March 2027 – if you have an offer from the university by this date, you must accept Newcastle as your Firm or Insurance choice by the next deadline.
  • 3 May 2027 – the last date to accept the Firm or Insurance choice for applicants holding an offer by 31 March 2027.
  • Awards are allocated throughout the academic year before your degree starts. The regulations say awards may be allocated early in the application cycle, so early course applications are encouraged.

How to apply for the Newcastle VCIS

  1. Apply for an eligible undergraduate degree at Newcastle University through UCAS, and make sure your application reaches UCAS by 13 January 2027.
  2. Wait for your offer of admission. There is no separate scholarship form – eligible candidates are automatically considered as part of the academic course application.
  3. If you receive a scholarship award, accept Newcastle as your Firm or Insurance choice on UCAS by 3 May 2027.
  4. Register as a full-time student in the 2027/28 academic year. Scholarships cannot be deferred to a later year.

Which applicants are not eligible?

The regulations list the exclusions. You cannot receive the Vice-Chancellor’s International Scholarship if you are:

  • an applicant for MB BS, BDS or Dental Therapy BSc;
  • a current registered student who has already started an undergraduate degree at Newcastle – the award cannot be made retrospectively;
  • an applicant whose fee status changes from international to home before or during the degree;
  • a student repeating a course;
  • a study abroad or exchange student;
  • an applicant funded through a partnership between the university and a partner organisation;
  • a fully sponsored student, or a student progressing to Newcastle from the NU International Study Centre pathway (a separate NU ISC VCIS award applies to those students).

You also cannot hold this award together with a Newcastle Vice-Chancellor’s Excellence Scholarship, a Newcastle University GREAT Scholarship, an Elite Sports Scholarship, a Spärck AI Scholarship, the International Family Discount, the Alumni Progression Scholarship or Discount, a faculty or school scholarship, or an NU International Study Centre scholarship. If you are successful in more than one, you receive the higher of the awards and the lower-value award is reallocated to another student.

One more condition worth knowing: successful candidates are expected to act as a student ambassador for the university from time to time, typically not more than 8 hours per semester.

Is there a postgraduate version of this Newcastle scholarship?

Yes. The same family has a Vice-Chancellor’s International Scholarship for postgraduate study (2027), listed by the university at £8,000 tuition fee awards for a course starting in September 2027 and lasting for the duration of the course. Its closing note reads that awards may be allocated early in the application cycle, so early course applications are encouraged.

A separate and larger Vice-Chancellor’s Excellence Scholarship (VCES) for postgraduate study is also open for 2027 entry – 30 awards of up to 50% off tuition fees, closing on 8 June 2027. Both are postgraduate awards and are applied for differently from the undergraduate scholarship described above, so check the official funding search for the exact terms of the level you are applying for.
