Oberlin College in Ohio is one of a small group of US liberal arts colleges that meets 100% of the financial need it calculates for every admitted student, and it is one of the very few that pays a US$10,000 scholarship to every single enrolling student before any need-based grant is worked out. For an Indian family the two things that decide the plan are the aid deadlines and the forms, so both are set out below.

For the 2027 entry cycle the actionable dates are 5 January 2027 for Early Decision II and 15 January 2027 for Regular Decision. Oberlin’s financial aid deadline is the same date as the application deadline in every round, so an Indian applicant who wants aid cannot apply first and sort the money out later. Early Action and Early Decision I closed on 1 November 2026.

What Oberlin promises international students
- 100% of demonstrated need met for every admitted student, as calculated by Oberlin’s Office of Financial Aid.
- For international students the college says plainly that it provides grants, scholarships, loans and on-campus employment to meet 100% of their calculated financial need.
- More than two-thirds of Oberlin students receive need-based assistance, and the college sets aside over US$100 million a year for student grants and scholarships.
- The published range of scholarships is US$10,000 to US$83,000+ and the average financial aid package is US$47,125.
- The College of Arts and Sciences charges no application fee.
- Average debt at graduation is less than half the national US average.
The US$10,000 Oberlin Commitment Scholarship every student receives
Oberlin’s Commitment Scholarship is the cleanest fact on the site: a renewable US$10,000 award to every student who enrols in the College of Arts and Sciences and/or the Conservatory of Music. The college spells out that all students, domestic, international and transfer, receive it, and that it renews each year at Oberlin. So an Indian student who enrols starts US$10,000 a year down on the bill before any need-based grant is calculated.
That matters because Oberlin’s sticker price is high: the 2026-27 tuition alone is US$70,320. The Commitment Scholarship does not replace a need-based award, it sits on top of the package that the aid office builds from the CSS Profile.
Merit scholarships: automatic review, no separate application
- Every admitted student is reviewed for merit scholarships automatically; there is no separate scholarship form.
- Merit awards are renewable for 8 semesters, or 10 semesters for Double Degree and BA+BFA students, and require full-time enrolment.
- The John F. Oberlin Scholarship is the main academic merit award for College of Arts and Sciences students.
- A senior in the final semester can still receive a prorated amount; students who are academically dismissed lose eligibility.
- Merit money does not transfer to non-affiliated study-abroad programmes and does not move between the College and the Conservatory.
- Oberlin also sponsors a US$2,000 National Merit Scholarship for finalists who name Oberlin as first choice, and a US$5,000 award for students who took part in Pioneer Academics.
Which Oberlin awards an Indian student does not qualify for
Three merit awards are tied to a region or nationality, and two of them are often quoted wrongly to Indian readers. The Oberlin Midwest Merit Scholarship pays US$25,000 a year, US$100,000 over four years, but only to students from Ohio and 11 Midwestern states. The Eduardo Chivambo Mondlane Scholarship (up to US$10,000) is limited to citizens of sub-Saharan African countries, and the Edwin O. Reischauer Scholarship (up to US$10,000) to Japanese nationals. Indian applicants are considered for the general merit awards and receive the US$10,000 Commitment Scholarship like everyone else.

How to apply for aid as an Indian applicant
- Submit the Oberlin application for the round you are targeting. The College of Arts and Sciences uses the Common Application and has no application fee.
- Complete the CSS Profile online and include Oberlin College, code 1587. The Profile priority date is 15 January; if you miss it the college still asks you to complete it so that institutional aid can be considered.
- If you cannot submit the CSS Profile, complete Oberlin’s International Student Application for Financial Assistance and upload it to your applicant portal.
- If your biological parents are separated, divorced or never married and not living together, the non-custodial parent must complete the Non-Custodial Parent Statement before 15 January. Oberlin does not receive that form automatically through the CSS Profile, so it has to be printed and uploaded or faxed to the aid office.
- Do not wait for an IDOC request: Oberlin does not participate in the College Board IDOC service. Documents go directly to the Financial Aid Office.
- Watch the dates on the FAFSA step. Oberlin lists it for US federal aid and tells Canadian citizens to skip it; Oberlin’s own institutional aid for international applicants runs through the CSS Profile or the ISFAA.
- Aid notifications for students admitted for the fall semester begin in late March; students admitted for the spring semester are notified after 1 December.
Documents the aid office asks for
- CSS Profile (code 1587) or the International Student Application for Financial Assistance.
- Non-Custodial Parent Statement, where the parents are separated, divorced or never married.
- Copies of all W-2 forms and signed tax returns; state tax returns are not wanted.
- A non-filer statement if your parents are not required to file a US tax return.
- The 2026-27 Oberlin Dependent Verification Form, due by 1 March.
