Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, meets 100% of every admitted student’s demonstrated financial need without packaging loans, and it considers candidates from every country for need-based aid. For an Indian student looking at a US liberal arts degree, that is a rare combination: the award is grant-based, and the university says plainly that admission for international students who need aid is extremely competitive.

The practical detail is sequencing. Wesleyan only funds students who ask for aid at the moment they apply, most international aid offers come through Regular Decision, and there is no aid at all for international transfer applicants. Here is the full money picture, the cost of attendance for 2026-27, and the deadlines for the 2027-28 aid cycle.

What Wesleyan promises, and what it costs to attend
Wesleyan’s aid pledge is need-based and loan-free: the university meets 100% of demonstrated need without loans for every student eligible for need-based aid, regardless of family income. Aid is calculated from the College Board’s Institutional Methodology, which usually produces a different family contribution than the federal method.
The 2026-27 cost of attendance is the base for the award calculation:
| Tuition | US$75,916 |
| Student Activity Fee | US$404 |
| New Student Matriculation Fee | US$300 (first year only) |
| Green Fund (optional, opt-out) | US$50 |
| Food and Housing | US$21,660 |
| Books, supplies and personal expenses (indirect) | US$2,750 |
| Total cost of attendance | US$101,080 for a first-year student; US$100,780 for continuing students |
Two structural facts sit behind that number. Wesleyan is a residential university, so all undergraduates live in University housing and hold a meal plan. Health insurance is compulsory, and the university’s own plan is optional only if you can show equivalent cover.
Need-aware admission, stated honestly
Wesleyan does not hide this: admission for international students who need financial aid is extremely competitive, and aid money for this group is limited. Most offers of admission to aid-seeking international students are made in Regular Decision, although the university also considers aid-seeking international applicants in Early Decision.
The application timing rule is strict. International students must apply for financial aid and be eligible at the time they apply for admission; a student who applies without requesting aid cannot receive Wesleyan aid until after a full year, or two semesters, of enrolment. International transfer applicants are excluded from aid entirely.
Deadlines: admission and the 2027-28 aid file
| Admission – Early Decision I | 15 November 2026 |
| Admission – Early Decision II | 1 January 2027 |
| Admission – Regular Decision | 1 January 2027 |
| Aid file – Early Decision I | 15 November 2026 |
| Aid file – Early Decision II | 1 January 2027 |
| Aid file – Regular Decision | 15 January 2027 |
| Aid file – returning gap year or deferred entry | 15 February 2027 |

Note the tightest window in the table: the Early Decision I aid file and the Early Decision I admission application fall on the same day, so a student choosing ED has to have the CSS Profile and tax documents ready in the same fortnight as the application essays.
Documents Wesleyan asks for
- The CSS Profile, submitted to Wesleyan’s school code 3959, for families with internet access and a Profile available in their country.
- The CSS Noncustodial Parent Profile when the student’s parents are divorced or separated, for first-year applicants.
- The International Student Financial Aid Application (ISFAA) as the fallback when the CSS Profile cannot be used because of cost or country restrictions. Noncustodial parents complete a separate ISFAA for their own household.
- Signed copies of the student’s and parents’ most recent federal tax returns with all schedules and W-2 forms, plus business returns where a parent owns a company.
- The FAFSA only if you are a US citizen or permanent resident – it is not the form for Indian applicants.
How the student contribution is calculated
Wesleyan budgets a student contribution of US$2,000 in the first year and US$2,200 in each later year, drawn from summer earnings, plus any contribution from student assets. Families with a parent contribution below US$10,000 see that contribution fall to US$1,200.
There is a further protection for the highest-need families: where parents contribute US$7,000 or less, Wesleyan replaces the US$1,200 student contribution with extra grant funding in the first year, and does the same for student-asset contributions below US$20,000. Students who cannot meet the student contribution can ask the financial aid office about loan options.
English proficiency and the application itself
Wesleyan treats English testing as optional but strongly recommended for applicants whose first language is not English. It accepts TOEFL iBT, IELTS Academic, the Duolingo English Test, Cambridge English, or SAT and ACT scores used as proof of English proficiency. If any document is not in English, certified translations must be sent with the originals.
