Pomona College in Claremont, California is one of a small group of US colleges that meet the full demonstrated financial need of every student eligible for need-based aid, and it does that without using loans. Aid is put together from grant money and a modest student employment allotment, so an Indian student who is admitted with aid is not asked to borrow for tuition.

The important qualifier sits on Pomona’s international aid page: the Admissions Committee takes financial need into account when it admits international applicants. Pomona is need-aware outside the United States, and the aid decision has to be made at the same time as the admission application. Early Decision I for the 2027 intake closes on 8 November 2026, with aid forms due a week later.

How Pomona builds an international aid package
Pomona calculates need from each family’s own financial documents, not from a formula tied to nationality. For students who qualify, the Offer of Financial Aid is made up of grant aid plus a modest student employment allotment. Loans exist on the market, but the college states that it does not use loans to meet a student’s financial need.
International students get two further protections that matter over four years. Financial eligibility is assessed once, at the time of admission, and does not change in later years. Returning international students on aid do not have to file a fresh aid application after their first year – the package simply continues, which is rare among US colleges.
Cost of attendance at Pomona for 2026-27
Pomona publishes a single cost-of-attendance table for the year, and it includes a change that saves students money: from fall 2026 the college supplies books and course materials to every student through its Access to Course Essentials programme at no extra charge, so books no longer appear as a separate line.
| Tuition | US$71,660 |
| Fees | US$420 |
| Housing and food (on campus) | US$23,590 |
| Total billable cost (on campus) | US$95,670 |
| Travel and personal (non-billable estimate) | US$1,500 to US$2,600 |
| Student health insurance | US$3,312 (can be waived with equivalent cover) |
| Books and supplies | Covered by the college under the ACE programme from fall 2026 |
Housing and food is the line that moves most: a student living off campus is costed at US$20,492 and a student living with parents or relatives at US$15,204, which brings the billable total down to US$92,572 and US$87,284 respectively.
Who is eligible for Pomona international aid
- First-year international applicants who need help meeting the cost of attendance, applying for aid at the same time as admission.
- Undocumented and DACAmented students, and students with refugee or asylee status living in the United States, are treated as domestic applicants and are not evaluated under the need-aware international policy.
- International transfer applicants may apply for need-based aid at the time of admission only.
- Applicants submit the CSS Profile with Pomona’s school code 4607, or the Pomona College International Financial Aid Application if the profile fee is a burden.
Three restrictions are worth reading twice. Once an international student submits the admission application, the financial aid application status cannot be changed. An international student admitted without aid cannot appeal later and will not be considered for aid as a returning student. And a student who needs aid has to accept that the request is part of the admission decision itself, because Pomona is need-aware for this group.
How to apply for Pomona financial aid as an international student
- Choose the application plan: Early Decision I (8 November 2026), Early Decision II or Regular Decision (both 8 January 2027). Pomona accepts the Common Application, Apply Coalition on Scoir and QuestBridge.
- Submit the CSS Profile with school code 4607. If the fee is a problem, complete the Pomona College International Financial Aid Application instead – it uses the Pomona Admissions ID printed at the top of your admissions portal.
- Upload a translated copy of the prior-prior year’s tax documents or statement of earnings – through IDOC if you filed the CSS Profile, through the admissions portal if you used the free Pomona form.
- Meet the aid deadline that matches your plan: 15 November 2026 for ED I, 15 January 2027 for ED II and Regular Decision, 1 March 2027 for transfer applicants.
- Keep the aid offer with the admission letter: Pomona sends both together, and the reply date for ED I is 1 January 2027.
Pomona important dates for the 2027 intake
| 8 November 2026 | Early Decision I application deadline (aid forms by 15 November 2026) |
| 15 December 2026 | ED I decisions released |
| 8 January 2027 | Early Decision II and Regular Decision application deadline |
| 15 January 2027 | Financial aid deadline for ED II and Regular Decision |
| 15 February 2027 | ED II decisions released |
| 1 April 2027 | Regular Decision results released |
Pomona runs one deadline per plan rather than a separate scholarship round, so there is no second chance to file the aid paperwork after the admission file closes. Late aid documents are the most common reason an otherwise complete international application loses its funding.
