Smith College Financial Aid for International Students 2027-28

Smith College, a women’s liberal arts college in Northampton, Massachusetts, is one of a small group of US colleges that both admits international students with need-based aid and has removed student loans from its own aid packages. For an Indian student who needs funding, that combination matters more than the sticker price.

Smith College Financial Aid for International Students

The catch is timing and competition. Smith states plainly that the pool of international applicants who ask for aid is highly competitive and that the level of support ranges widely with family circumstances. Aid is also closed to anyone who applies after admission. Both points are below, in Smith’s own words.

What the no-loan policy actually means for Indian families

Smith’s own wording: the college has eliminated loans from its undergraduate financial aid packages for students who receive institutional need-based aid, replacing those funds with institutional grants. It also states that it will meet the full documented need, as determined by college policy, of every admitted student who applies for aid by the published deadline.

So a funded offer is built from the Smith Grant (plus campus work, which the college describes as money you may earn for books and personal spending rather than a required contribution), not from a loan that has to be repaid after graduation. Private student loans exist only as a separate financing option, and Smith notes that they generally need a qualified US co-signer – which most Indian families do not have.

Three conditions sit inside that promise:

  • Your expected family contribution is fixed. Smith keeps the family contribution the same in each year you attend and adjusts the Smith Grant so the total stays stable.
  • Cost increases above the aid increase are yours. Any rise in the cost of attendance that is not covered by a rise in aid becomes the family’s responsibility.
  • Outside awards reduce the grant. Outside scholarships and tuition benefits first replace campus work, then reduce the Smith Grant dollar for dollar. US federal and state grants also reduce the Smith Grant dollar for dollar.

Cost of attendance at Smith College, 2026-27

Smith publishes the 2026-27 figures below. Health insurance is billed to all students and domestic students may waive it; aided international students get a health grant that covers the college plan, so do not simply add that line to your own estimate if you are applying for aid.

  • Tuition: US$70,460
  • Food and housing: US$24,520
  • Student activities fee: US$308
  • Health insurance: US$4,030 (waivable for domestic students; covered by a health grant for aided international students)
  • Indirect costs used in the aid calculation: books and materials US$800, personal expenses US$1,910, transportation at an international average of US$1,000

Direct billed costs therefore come to about US$99,318 before the indirect allowances, which is the number a full-need package has to cover.

Who is eligible for Smith need-based aid

  • Non-US citizens applying as first-year or transfer students are eligible for need-based aid.
  • You must apply for aid before admission. Smith states that international students who do not apply for aid before they are admitted are not eligible for institutional aid at Smith at any time – not in year two, not after a family change.
  • The award depends on family finances as documented in the aid application and tax or income statements, not on test scores or grades alone.
  • The international aid pool is described by Smith itself as highly competitive, with support levels that vary widely – a full ride is possible, a partial grant is far more common.

Documents Smith asks international applicants for

All international aid applicants submit the same core set, with separate rounds for each decision plan:

  1. CSS Profile for the 2027-28 year, opened on 1 October. Use Smith’s CSS code 3762. A fee-waiver request form is linked from the aid page if the fee is a barrier.
  2. CSS Profile for noncustodial parents, where that applies to your family.
  3. Translated, signed parent tax return for the most recent completed tax year, for custodial and noncustodial parents as applicable. Families not required to file a return in their country complete Smith’s International Parent Non-Filer form on the Net Partner portal plus a translated employer income statement.
  4. Upload the documents to College Board’s IDOC service after the CSS Profile. Smith asks for PDF format for anything sent through Net Partner.

Smith College deadlines for 2027-28 entry

Admission and aid deadlines are close together but not identical – miss the aid date and the application is treated as one that did not request aid.

  • Early Decision I: admission application 15 November 2026; CSS Profile, noncustodial profile and tax documents all 15 November 2026.
  • Early Decision II: admission application 5 January 2027; aid documents 6 January 2027.
  • Regular Decision: admission application 15 January 2027; aid documents 25 January 2027.
  • Transfer, September 2027 entry: aid documents 11 March 2027.

Early Decision at Smith is binding, but the college follows the NACAC rule: a student who applies for aid and is not offered an award that makes attendance possible may decline the place and be released from the commitment.

Merit scholarships at Smith that need no separate application

Smith also runs merit awards that every applicant is considered for automatically – there is no separate form. They are worth knowing about because for an international student they can be the only money available if aid was not requested in time.

  • STRIDE Scholarship: US$22,500 a year for four years, awarded to about 50 students a year, and STRIDE scholars also get a paid research assistantship with a US$3,000 annual stipend for two years.
  • Smith Presidential Scholarship: US$12,000 a year for four years for selected entrants.
  • Zollman Scholarship: half of tuition for four years, for fewer than ten first-year students – this one is limited to US citizens.

Merit awards are counted as a resource when need is calculated, so they reduce need-based aid rather than stacking on top of it.

How to apply for aid at Smith, step by step

  1. Submit the Common Application or Coalition Application by the deadline for your round.
  2. Tick the financial aid request inside the application – Smith will not add aid later for international students.
  3. Complete the 2027-28 CSS Profile with code 3762 and, if relevant, the noncustodial parent profile.
  4. Upload translated tax documents or the non-filer form plus employer income statement to IDOC.
  5. Track the file on Net Partner, the portal Smith opens once the admission application is received.
  6. Aid decisions are released with the admission decision for applicants who met the aid deadline.
